yellowTAB announced that they will be attending the CeBIT in Hannover this year while they have scheduled another TV appearence. In the meantime, FreeNet.de reviews Zeta (in German).

Well, YellowTab seem to know a thing or two about marketing. They seem to be much more active then what BeInc were in their heyday.
I’m frankly happy about yTs existence. They seem to attract some new users to the BeOS community which very quickly, getting informed about how Zeta is built become heavy supporters of OpenBeOS!
Go to CeBit, go to a lot more please Bernd, but please try to not talk down about other operating systems, just get us even more OBOS supporters!!!

Wow, are they really rewriting the kernel? Well, I don’t believe it. Or are they going to patch the kernel to have it ignore the extra memory?
There has been rumours about some russian guy (if I’m not mistaken) who managed to patch the binary kernel and make it work with more memory. (Not sure if that would mean ignoring it or using it). Since that patch has become known I’d be surprised if yT would not incorporate it into Zeta.
Still… I hope we get to see some more commercial software relying on BeOS soon… Tunetrackersystems and Xentronix are two of them… but I wouldn’t defy a couple more…

I thought BeOS-like systems were also using a slash as path delimiter like most modern operating systems.

My German’s a bit rusty, but are they claiming Zeta is a development that’s 80% new??? Take Dano, add a bunch of ugly themes, a host of BeBits drivers and outdated apps, throw in some extra language files and claim you have an 80% newly developed OS? All this while the question to which sources YT has access to remains unanswered? LOL! Maybe Bernd bought Steve Jobs’ Reality Distortion Field on eBay?
I guess I’ll have to follow that marketing course after all, maybe then it’ll start to make some sense…

They do. You can notice it right away both in BeOS shell and Tracker. Backslash is of course used for special characters and space (” “)when in BeOS shell.
…and will they finally come out with a release version, not these “Release Candidates”? It’s pretty late as it is.

Most likely they will use that hack making the kernel ignore any RAM exceeding BeOS’/Zeta’s limit.

No, they are indeed saying that 80% of Zeta are new. This, of course, is true only if compared to Beos R5. Unfortunately phrasing in the article gives a different impression.
That aside, their marketing has improved dramatically in the last few months.

No! It actually means that 80% of Zeta are newly developed. Strange, but that’s what the statement says…
Zeta is a hack-job, as far as I can tell, from what I’ve read. An effort to revive a dying OS, based on little more than patches and appearance changes. Wow, that’s just gonna bring ’em in droves…
After having used MacOS X for months now (on my G3 B&W and now G4 DA), I look back at BeOS and think… “I actually used and played with that… for years? The UI is so… blah!”
I honestly believe BeOS is in it’s grave (R.I.P). Unless OpenBeOS can actually get their product finished and out to people by no later than the end of this year, BeOS will become such a “used to be” OS, the few commercial apps that are made for it will be the only ones that will ever be made for it. It will become an absolute dino OS in the face of Windows XP, MacOS X, the billions of versions of Linux, and thousands of versions of BSD.
If putting OpenBeOS into the GPL is the only way it will actually see the light within MY lifetime, so be it. Better to have a great OS that NO ONE can proprietize, than a “used to be great” OS that NO ONE uses… period!
But… I really don’t think ANYTHING can save it now… it’s simply too far gone and forgotten in people’s minds. They’re getting on with their lives and onto what is Now and Today…

When they include 1000 BeBits Apps, OK its 80% more software then R5 or Dano.
