BeOS/Zeta user group JPBE.net recently exhibited at the Kansai Open Source 2004 show held in Osaka, Japan, inviting yellowTAB Senior Development Engineer Bruno G. Albuquerque to host a seminar on OpenBFS, and to demo the latest version of Zeta OS. News site www.iscomputeron.com now carries a report of Kansai Open Source 2004, while videos of the OpenBFS session and an on stage Zeta demo are also available from JPBE.net. Also, C# for BeOS.

c# for beos? requires bone though. while i just recently installed beos again, i dont much care for the idea of installing bone.
And when it does with talent, it’s hard not to be happy. C# was ported by someone who only used BeOS for 2 months… looks very promising =)))

Yes, BONE is the “new thing”, but if it ain’t your cup of tea, don’t take it, that’s ok. I know many that are still happy and productive on WP 5.1
Then again, in most any platform where you want to use C#, you would be required to use the newer thing. In Windows, that would be .Net, and on Linux, Mono. And while most Linux things are open source, I really don’t see many Linuxies taking the effort to use Mono on Redhat 6 or anything that old.
On another point, it gets me on a good mood that the Haiku community is slowly, but steadily, getting traction.
Despite some editor’s opinions (*wink*) that say the platform is dead, I’m glad that there is activity going on: a new commercial game in production for Zeta (FutureBoy, http://www.generalcoffee.com/futureboy/index.html ), a new Flash Player is being worked on, Firefox is pretty much up-to-date, and Haiku has reached a new important milestone.
Sure, world domination won’t be achieved at 2010 like many expected, but maybe a country or two might still be possible.

Why are the videos zipped up? I’m not even going to bother watching them since I can’t stream them.
The (original Be’s) BONE installer that can be found on BESHare is very simple to use – dangerously so! Be careful, the update patches kernel, among other things. If you are one of those R5 users that had to patch the kernel just to make it work on AMD systems, your system may not boot up after installing BONE – since it kind of overrited AMD patch, or something.
I have to say that using BONE from BeShare is _not_ legal. BONE was only supplied to some Beta testers. But you could use ZETA instead – it features BONE off the shelf.
Like atari^vcs said, using BONE on R5 is not legal.
When will Haiku’s networking stack be usable as a replacement for BONE? Or is it already usable with certain NICs?

If you talk about the flash lib from linux being used then it won’t support newer flash features. In order to get newer flash support, one needs to sign a NDA with macromedia in order to get documentation on newer flash releases.

Haikus hasn’t a working replacement for net_server and also not for BONE yet. But as far as I know there are already working on it.

Right. I think that a relly cool OS like BeOS (and its clones/reimplementations) should choose the right audio and video formats.
I hope Haiku will support the full potential of Xiph’s ones…

it isnt that, i would like to use bone, i just dont want to install it for two reasons. its legal status is very much doubtful and i figure it will break my system as i have to run a patched kernel anyway.
the end of the video showed a little firefox but i was wondering if firefox 1.0PR in BeOS runs similarly to the Windows version?

Haiku’s networking is not feature complete, let alone production quality.
However, it does work on some NIC’s for broadband. Several people have used it to run Vision (IRC client), BeShare, and other internet apps.
I, myself haven’t tested it yet as I’m a poor sap on dial-up, which is not yet implemented.
As Anonymous said, its working. Its unstable due to threading issues, apparently; but it works for PPPoE and direct ethernet connections to the internet and LAN’s. Its BONE compatible, in the main; and cvs, Mozilla, BeShare and Vision all work, amongst other things.
It should work on all NIC’s that BeOS supports. Although the SiS900 can be flaky, it seems. Ironically its a Haiku driver that you use for the SiS900…
Not sure what I did wrong, but when I tried to after I installed BONE on BeosMax5 V3.0, the computer kept rebooting itself. So I’ll guess I’ll just wait for the next PhOS beta.
Wake me when yellowTAB’s Zeta has a decent license and maybe then I’ll consider spending 100eu on it…
A completely new open source flash player for BeOS is in development (if it didn’t die already). Search for it on the yellowtab forums. It is a one man project, and it will stay that way because the developer does it to get some sort of programmer certificate from Macromedia (don’t know if he also signed an NDA), and therefore he cannot accept any help.
Another word of caution for some. BONE may be installed on a “stock” R5.0.3 and will not affect too many apps other than some network type apps.
Zeta and PhOS are both based on Dano, and as such, they will cause some inconsistancies with many apps. This is due to changes that Be Inc. was in the process of making, but unable to finish before their demise and purchase by Palm Inc.
Many can mbe fixed by simply downloading a different ver. (ie: for BONE) from BeBits, but Zeta also carries with it some changes made by yT. Many apps listed as for Zeta will not run on Dano or PhOS. I’m not sure if there are problems with the reverse usage.
Forgot to add, BONE does NOT work on BeOS Max. I’m not sure if a fix is, or ever will be in the works.
Bone WORKS on BeOSMax 3 as i use it for several month.
But if you have AMD, you need to check the .patch files and disable PIII optimizations.
OK, my mistake. I have not used Max 3 yet.
