“Microsoft is pitching a new development tool at non-professional developers who want to make use of the features of .NET. The new tool, known as the Web Matrix project, offers all of the basic single-user features that would be expected and doesn’t have some of the management features that are to be found in Visual Studio .NET. The idea is to provide a simple and easy to use development tool that will promote the use of .NET at all levels and also engender the idea of a development community where individuals help each other to come up with solutions. Web Matrix is available free of charge as a relatively small 1.2 MB download.” Read the story at TheRegister.
I’ve been using this for a few days now, and so far, so good. It’s the right tool for the right price for .net web development, and without the overkill of VS.net.
Sorry if I sound too much like a microsoft stooge, but you’ve gotta give credit where it’s due.
What’s the quality of the code this thing outputs?
W3C compliant, or IE only hoopla?
The beef I had with server side controls when ASP.net started was that they weren’t throwing out nice code that was easily changeable…ie..XHML vs HTML, upper vs. lower case, etc…i’m sure that’s changed by now…even still…
More to a better point, why write ASP.net that runs one place, when PHP/Perl can go more places…
what do you mean by “PHP/Perl can go more places”?
I think he/she means outside of the Microsoft .NET platform. PHP and Perl run on various OS and hardware combinations on the server side, and on almost all web browsers on the client side (also, Perl is completely independent of the web and services being a complete programming language and all).
The thing I’m shocked about is how SMALL this little thingie is. A complete and useful Microsoft product that FITS ON A FLOPPY is rare, and nifty. Oh, and it’s FREE! I’d download the thing just to play with it. I know I’d eventually run into something that can only be done if I upgraded to Visual Studio.NET, but this is more than I expected.
Microsoft in my opinion has been pretty generous with free downloads… especially for developers… they have some nice things available
the platform sdk… the ddk’s (making device drivers) , the directx sdk… .NET framework sdk….
… because the vast majority of the code it uses is in the Framework. Most .NET apps are very, very small because of this.
I think it’s great, but my needs require me to use VS.NET.
By the way, I’m posting this from the new iMac I just bought today!
How do you write an os with it…
I’m tired hearing about .NET this .NET that. More OS (centric) news.
Get a clue…this site is much more then just OS’s. Is this your first time here or something…again get a clue.
Your issue is probably just a microsoft thing…get over it.
Does anyone else detect a hidden meaning in the choice of name “Web Matrix”?
Welcome to the Matrix. The Microsoft machine now controls you. Most people don’t realize this is going on. Only those who have been woken up…
Get a life….if you really allow a company to control you you have some amjor issues you need to deal with. When are people going to wake up and realize that both windows and other OS’s have their place. If these two groups would just work together imagine the apps and OS we would have. duh!!
“If these two groups would just work together imagine the apps and OS we would have. duh!!”
First of all, it was partially a joke. You might try humor sometime. Its an interesting concept. Are you a vulcan?
But anyway, to address your statement. Sure it would be great if everyone would work together. The problem is that experience has demonstrated that Microsoft is not willing to do that. Microsoft does not want open standards. And you are kidding yourself if you think that Microsoft does not want to control Internet standards.
>Your issue is probably just a microsoft thing…get over it.
Most stupid thing I ever heard. If I was against Microsoft I’d confess it here directly. Don’t spread BS about people if you don’t want to be a moron. I’m just interested in OS-News, not HTML-building and web-applications stuff.
Go to a different site then….as you can see here they include information from all points of the technology world.
OS’s, development, Web, everything!!!!
First off I wasn’t saying Microsoft as a company should work together with other groups…..I was speaking of the developers who either develope for Windows and hate everything else or vice-versa with the Linux/FreeBSD/BeOS and so on.
This commenting-system is getting more and more Slashdot-like everyday. Come on. Commenting-systems are used for comments, positive as well as negative. They’re all fun and games until someone gets hurt, though.
Please don’t shoot any messengers and please don’t throw crap at anyone. Just because someone wants more OS-centric news doesn’t mean they have to go away. Otherwise someone at OSNews will have to implement functions so that we can ignore morons, trolls, off-topic stuff and so on. I think most ppl do a fine job at commenting articles and other comments, let’s keep it that way.
Btw, personally I’d like to see more OS-centric news, but I don’t mind the occational review/presentation/article on other areas. Also OSNews and it’s community are very good…
There, I’m done ranting.
“First off I wasn’t saying Microsoft as a company should work together with other groups…..”
Microsoft should work with other companies when it comes to the Internet though. The Internet should have open standards. It should not be controlled by a corporate entity.
This is why Java was so successful. Sun didn’t try to use Java to dominate the internet. Instead, they made Java a community development process. Lots of people besides Sun are on the Java consortium. IBM for example has contributed a great deal to Java. IBM and SUN are traditionally rivals in the UNIX arena, but when it comes to Java, they put that aside and work together on a technology that provides mutual benefit for everyone.
Microsoft however, is not willing to do this. They want to maintain total control over everything.
If Sun could have control over Internet standards they would and they would be very happy doing so…..sadly…its all about money and profits not open standards
