This update, 2.1.2 alias Kiiminkijoki, fixes dozens of bugs reported by our community and adds many improvements. It makes the new Dropbox service interface available and improves some security features. 2.1.2 also contains the basic support for Sony Xperia X devices for development purposes (available for a limited user group only).
This might be the first release I’ve seen which contains a feature or fix that isn’t coming to the original Jolla Phone – namely,
the updated Android support. The original Jolla Phone was released in December 2014, so that’s not a hugely terrible run.
For those of you, who, like me, are running Sailfish OS on a Nexus 5, I just found http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=99377 which gives instructions for getting up-to-date Sailfish OS running on a Nexus 5. I’ve been using Sailfish OS on a Nexus 5 following the instructions at https://wiki.merproject.org/wiki/Adaptations/libhybris/Install_Sailf… which hasn’t been updated in a while, so I’m still on 2.0.0.10. It’s my only phone, so I’ll hold off on messing with the OS until the weekend.
Nexus 4 too? I have one sitting in a drawer, but it all looked too complicated to be worth getting such an old version. This might be worth trying.
You can install Windows 10 on a 20 year old Pentium 3, but you can’t even get an updated OS for a 3 year old phone.
I think i’m gonna start collecting old smartphones. The’d make quite novel patio tiles.
People have this weird desire to abandon their current phone as soon as new and more shiny model hits the market. Well, at least majority of the people. Thus, they couldn’t care less about updates.
Also, when did we come to this (absurd) point where phone software updates are more important than computer’s?..
I wouldn’t say they are more important, but that is actually debatable. They are surely more needed. Smartphone OS’s are just much more in their infancy and require a lot more updates to get the functionality that allows them to be useful.
In the last 4 years my phone has received major software updates that added things like a swiping keyboard, slowmotion camera support, live-images, VPN, QuickActions, Notifications, Searchable settings, Digital Assistant, Device Encryption and the list goes on, that weren’t there at all to begin with.
In the same timeframe my computer received mostly minor updates that make the computer nicer/more efficient to use.
Smartphones are also always on, always connected (to unsecure Wifi instead of being behind a firewall), hardly managed/supported and get stolen a lot more than computers so they do need constant updates to stay secure

Agreed, the immaturity of the platforms is a large reason why. However, I think the terrible fragmentation in Android land is a bigger reason. All flagships this year have the same SOC, but you couldn’t take a OS built for one and put it on the other. They all have to be custom due to different non soc hardware (camera, screen, fingerprint reader, etc) , even before anyone thinks about adding any custom functionality in the os or ui.
If you ( by you, I mean Google) could get a single os image to work on multiple phones from different manufacturers, then we’d be in a wonderful place of milk and honey. The big rock candy mountain.
Qualcomm and Tegra driver support being the usual awful Qualcomm and Tegra support (MediaTek doesn’t even know what the word means so I won’t even mention them)
The only Nexus device to get 3 years of upgrades so far is the Nexus Player because it has an Intel chip.

I feel choosing to use Sailfish is related to NOT wanting to be (so easily) spied upon (as, say, Google can with Android).
Considering Sony’s history, I can’t help but fail to understand the reasonning behind Jolla people’s choice.
The support for Sony Xperia X devicesis not available for a “limited user group only” as this post says.

I just got the Note 8, but I’m still considering getting a Sony Xperia X for Jolla. Had considered picking up a Nexus 5 to play around with it as well, but it’s a rather old phone by now.
Looks like if you’re in North America you can’t even buy Sailfish X.
