The second beta of OpenSUSE Linux 10.1 has been released today. Main changes: “Fixes for a number of bugs – but note that most of the bugs reported against beta1 are not fixed yet; further integration and fixing of NetworkManager; SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta1 comes with the Intrusion Prevention framework; AppArmor 2.0 which is started by default in beta2; updated to KDE 3.5.1 release packages.” Downloads locations are in the release announcement.
I love SUSE, it’s my favorite Linux disto, but it seems to me that their beta release schedule must be too aggressive.

It generates news, creates attention, and keeps your name next to others on the sameday they make press releases. Silly games played by marketing departments.
Their beta release schedule is fixed, think of them as weekly snapshots of their tree. This way, as they are *STILL* adding new packages and features, people can identify and report more bugs. They’re still beta releases.
They don’t do this for publicity, it’s just their way. If osnews and other sites like to post whenever they launch a new *test* version, they can’t stop them… (Not that I object, although I already subscribe to the opensuse-announcements mailing list).
They can tell their beta testers to download the latest package and re-test to cross reference and see if they still are there.
While Windows is still my main platform, I’ve been trying out different Linux distributions on occasion since the late nineties. I played with OpenSUSE 10.0 LiveCD [With KDE] the other day and must say that I’m very impressed. I’m not sure how it would fair using it on a daily basis, but it seems to be progressing nicely. All of my hardware was automatically configured; My Windows network was accessible without configuration; The UI is slick and fast. I’m not sure if most of that is due to improvements in the Linux kernel or KDE, but the platform is looking pretty good.
yes, suse is a very good distribution, esp for windows users who want to test-drive linux. multimedia continues to be a problem, as it is illegal for suse to deliver it with their distro, but this can be solved easilly… i think 10.1 will be an impressive piece of work.

The reason they use this agressive beta model is because it works. Remember, this is after a four month Alpha program. SUSE is a wonderful distribution and has been my main platform for almost 3 years now.
KDE 3.5.1 isn’t out yet…they are using the beta code from them but anticipate the final code before the final 10.1 release. It has been gratifying to me to uncover bugs and have the techs on the other side work the problem out with you..opening up SUSE to public testing has been great, even if it does make things a little more haphazard for them, I’m sure.
It’s one of the most solid distro’s out there, not to take anything away from the many other distro’s too, but it’s been my choice for a while now. I thank all of the fine people working on this project. It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty damn good!
SuSE works pretty good. I can’t get my WLAN PCMCIA card working properly on distros other than SuSE and Mandrake (they work but they loose 70% of packets from access point 1m above). The only thing thay annoys me is that f***** scripts (which last forever to complete) that are run by YaST when I install anything, or is this SuSE 10.0 weakness ?

Install y2pmsh with yast, then next time just use
su -c “y2pmsh isc <package_you_want>”
Works for me, and it’s much faster 😉
yeah, these scripts are Yast-specific, and the most important (and maybe only) negative point mostly voiced about yast.
I like SuSE also, especially on my wireless laptop. However, 10.1beta2 won’t install on software raid systems because raidtools have been dropped!! Also, when trying to install on a LV over software raid, the install script copies all of the boot info to the LV /boot instead of the designated 0x83 /boot partition boot device. Bugs entered for both: the boot problem to be fixed in beta 4, looks like mdadm will be used for setting up software raid, don’t know the beta release it will be in.
What’s that AppArmor 2.0 thing? Sounds sweet, is it kind of like SELinux?

AppArmor is Novell’s answer to SELinux. They felt that properly configuring SELinux was too complex for most people, and wanted to promote a secure platform that was actually usable by most people. It used to be an addon that cost additional money (about $1200 I believe), which made it feasible for enterprise use only. They just opensourced it though, bundling it for free. The only charge now is if you want official support for it.
Yeah…it’s similar, but takes a different approach…where SELinux is general and systemic, AppArmor is application specific, where you can create separate profiles for each part of the system…I am not totally clear on how to set it up, but it does look very useful for enterprise networks. For home, I usually shut off SELinux and/or AppArmor because it’s just the wife and I and the entire network is behind a hardware firewall and the wireless is encrypted pretty well….I’m not too worried. I don’t like to add the complexity of these security schemes if it’s not necessary…but it does look like a pretty cool set-up.

Well the great strenght of AppArmor is it’s simplicity of configuration and general usage.Thus less error prone.I enabled AppArmor on my mothers PC.
I just installed beta-2 and noticed it’s now possible to easily add profiles for iptables and shorewall via the configuration *wizzard* (cli or Yast).
With the following you set all profiles to be *enforced*:enforce /etc/subdomain.d/*.
Likewise:complain /etc/subdomain.d/*
By editing /etc/apparmor/subdoain.conf you can get even more restrictions.
Like other DAC’s it involves eliminating unnessecary Capabillities amongst other things.
You could do the following: echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/cap-bound and thus removing all capabillities and rendering the system almost steerless.So and intelligent protection sheme like AppArmor which restricts CAP’s and which files app’s may access…
All in all SuSE is becoming very sophisticated.
I have checked the KDE site and I have not found information on the 3.5.1 release. Did this actually happen or is this a misprint?
It’s not a misprint. Although it’s not yet publicly available at KDE official servers, most distros are able to get it roughly one week before public release. KDE 3.5.1 was tagged on the 20th, so probably later today, or in the next few days, there’ll be a new release. My distro (Gentoo) already has it in portage (hardmasked, though).
About OpenSuSe… it looks really promising. My girlfriend loves my desktop, and has been asking me to install KDE in her computer for a while. I was considering Fedora but honestly for some reason I find OpenSuSe much more adequate for her needs.
