Top Dell executives disparaged the "big iron" approach of building large, powerful servers on Tuesday--a dig at rivals IBM, Sun Microsystems and Hewlett-Packard. Red Hat needs to lower its prices, or risk losing customers to free versions of the open-source operating system, the Dell executive who oversees the partnership with the Linux seller said Tuesday.

Probably one of the most talked about linux distributions in second part of this year was Ubuntu. It is Linux distribution based on Debian Unstable with nice selection of Gnome applications and it fits to one CD. Thanks to financial support from Canonical they have been able to offer free CDs, and that is really nice touch.

Microsoft said Tuesday that it has released a near-final test version of updates to its Windows and Windows Server operating systems. Also, Windows Server 2003 SP1 RC1 has RDP over SSL already included.

It is interesting to note that FreeBSD developers are giving consideration to phasing out sysinstall in favor of a new install program for FreeBSD. A Journaling FS like ReiserFS also seems to be on the cards for future FreeBSD releases, Kerneltrap reports.
