According to reports, OSX 10.4 and 10.4.1 is freezing after ~2 hours of uptime when Watching QuickTime7 from Safari or Fullscreen / Using Slideshow / iPhoto slideshow “fullscreen” / ALL OpenGL games in Fullscreen, freezing in either entering or exiting the game. This happens with ALL 1.8 Ghz PowerMac G5’s (Late 2004 Model)! No fix for this bug unless Apple fixes it! Works perfectly in Panther.
Also a user reports that AppleCare has said that they are NOT fixing this problem, meanign THAT ALL 1.8 Ghz G5 PowerMac’s are zombie straight out of the box! Being unable to do any proper multimedia in fullscreen after 2 hours of uptime!
This is a serious flaw that requires public attention because Apple is selling the machines with TIGER without telling of this problem to customers of the new machine!

Also bug has been reported to ADC bugreport system, is still in Open status with many people (or duplicate).
I have a dual 1.8Ghz, and my dad has a single 1.8ghz G5, we game, both WoW and Halo for 3-4 hours with no issues…. And I watch the new Quick time Trailers in HD at full screen with no problem…
I am running 10.4.1 my dads running 10.4
I’ve been experiencing this since I upgraded from 10.3.7 to 10.3.8 on my Rev. A Dual 1.8. I had to resort to my 17″ Powerbook to watch the WWDC keynote…
I have been playing way too much Enemy Territory with no problems.
Have you tried on an Intel CPU ? Maybe they didn’t test it enough on PPC 😉
no problems on a dual-1.8. many days uptime, watching movies, etc.
Why is this sort of article news all of the sudden? If you have a bug report, go report it to Apple … this is about the same as saying “Hey, my 2Ghz Athlon XP box crashes after using Windows Media Player for too long – I’m sure everybody’s does – this is outrageous”…
For all of us that think there should be better articles on OSNews … maybe it’s time that we start writing … I’m seriously thinking about it…
Does anyone know if this issue has been fixed in the newly released 10.4.2 fix?

Its a subtle feature telling you to upgrade to newer models.

Perhaps! you! could! have! used! some! more! exclamation! marks!
I wanted to give a fair warning of this since according to sources, Apple isnt fixing this one.
This affects only 1.8 Ghz PowerMac G5 Single CPU (Late 2004) the model they are selling right now.
Being a bug that cripples the system, its rather critical and Apple also admits it, yet is saying no fix is coming.
I’am facing the same problem. I don’t know if US users are affected or not with this bug, but ALL european users are facing exactly the same BUG !! I’am living in FRANCE and all French people owning a PM G5 SP 1.8 ghz late 2004 are facing this serious bug !! Many french websites and forums are talking about this bug, we all send a bug report to ADC, but APPLE doesn’t listen to us !
I’ve got a dual 1.8GHz G5 PowerMac and it doesn’t freeze when playing long stretches of WoW or Doom 3. Maybe just single processor machines?
As the topic says, its only single cpu machines.
Seems to be a design flaw with the single macs, and THEM not supporting Tiger
Now I remember why I quit reading OS News a year or two ago….
I work for an Apple Specialist and have seen no such thing.
Mine is a refurb Rev. A machine with a gig of ram, purchased in July of 2004 . Mine acts EXACTLY the way you describe, except that it sometimes happens within a few minutes of booting up…
The G5 has to be one of the worst machines ever. Nice case. But everything else about it was junky.
Apple’s switch to a higher quality foundation (Intel) could not happen soon enough!
This is a really bad article, if it can be called that.
After following the links and looking on the Internet, I fail to find anything saying that Apple are refusing to fix a bug. In actual fact it looks more like the author of the article has sensationalized the article hoping to attract Apple developers attention and get his bug fixed quicker.
Its unlikey that a reputable company such as Apple who sell a combination of hardware and software would knowingly ship software or hardware with a bug in it, then refuse to fix it.
Sorry – without more evidence or a statement from Apple, I am not buying this. I think the editors should have checked this one out a little more.

I have a 12″ 1.5GHz G4 PB that I am in the process of downgrading to Panther. I have to say, after using Tiger for about a month, I’m not happy with it. For starters, it’s noticeably but subtly slower than Panther, then there’s the fact that some apps I use work better with or require 10.3.
I was quite excited about the Tiger upgrade and I’ll admit that Spotlight is nice. I’ll also miss the synchronization between file operations on the CLI and GUI. However, Tiger seems to have been released a little prematurely. The speed really perplexes me, as I was so happy with the system when I got it in Feb. Since Tiger, I find that the system seems sluggish.
Perhaps I’ll go back when I find a 10.4.x that I’m happy with but until then it’s back to Panther for me with Tiger relegated to an external FW drive.
is that quicktime 7.0 or 7.0.1 ?
My dual 1.8 is working fine.
when i bought it the first few versions of 10.3 would crash every few days. I think 10.3.7 fixed that and has been fine since.
Tiger hasn’t crashed on me, but i have seen bugs like slide show not even working, or quicktime not wanting to play something from places like apples movie trailer site.
Then again quicktime has always blown for such reasons, so not an issue.
I would guess this is a far more isolated issue then described. Probably a certain config with certain app.
I don’t have much issues with mine. I’m more upset about apple moving to intel thus causing my machine when it’s not even 2 years old to be a legacy lump that is hoping for support from not just apple but software vendors. I bought it to keap for a long time, but odds are i will be constantly finding myself out of luck for stuff. Just cause apple supports it doesn’t mean others will, and doesn’t mean apple will support new features on old boxes.
Now lets stop telling fibs
The freezing affects only Mac users with OS X Tiger installed on a PowerMac G5 single 1.8 Ghz (late 2004).
Users with the older Revision of the PM 1.8 SP (june 2004) and users with Dual PPC Mac’s don’t have the freezing problem.
Its true, mostly people from europe reported they have the freezing problem with Tiger on the PM 1.8 SP (late 2004), but a lot american users said also they are affected by the freeze bug.
The facts:
TIGER is freezing after 2-3 hours uptime, if people launch a Program in full screen mode, and also with Quicktime 7.xx in Safari, doesnt happen with OS X Panther.
The freezing with Quicktime 7.xx occurs more often with Quicktime in full screen mode, than in Safari with the Quicktime Plugin.
Aside Quicktime, the freezing occurs if you start/run a Slideshow with Preview 3.0, Spotlight 1.0, Mail 2.x and iPhoto 5.0.x .
Some said it happens also with 3D OpenGL Games, if they quit the Games.
We love our Mac’s the Mac OS X and Apple, but freezing on our PM 1.8 is not acceptable.
For all who cannot imagine the freeze bug, the bug seems to be visible in the Video-Stream of the keynote (january 2005) from Moscone Center in San Francisco.
To view the bug, move the progress-bar of Quicktime to 11 minutes and 43 seconds, then watch it from 00:11:43 – 00:12:25.
You see a demonstration Spotlight features, the Mac is freezing on switch to fullscreen mode with Spotlight. It seems to be exactly the same issue.

I’ve got a PowerMac G5 1.8 Mono with an ATI 9600XT graphic card and I’ve got the same problem.
The fact is that every OpenGL full screen application freezes the whole system after some uptime (about 2 hours).
You can run applications before it happens but if you quit the application (for example a game) after, the system will also freeze.
As I play some games like WoW, I had to reinstall Panther in order to play it.
A lot of other applications freezes the system, including : almost all games, iTunes, iMovie, QT 7, etc…
THAT IS NOT A SOLUTION. Apple had to correct this bug quickly !!!
My PM G5 SP 1.8 (late 2004) is facing this problem, too.
Since April 29 2005 i can’t work with my Mac !!!
My Mac is not usable for video editing anymore. I reported the bug to Apple and they were not able to reproduce it on there computers. This is the response I got:
“We have now had the same machine running for over 24 hours and we are not locking up at all. Can you provide me with more information on what content that was looping or playing for that long, and if possible can we get a copy of it for testing?”
I sent them some more information but never heard anything from them again…I think that’s really bad for a company like Apple. The PM was my first Mac and as it looks now, it will also be my last.
Hello
It was freezing again at 12:27 CET, after opening a website with a mov movie.
I did the same as last time, didnt turn off the Mac and after 45 minutes did the movie play, no panic.log, no crash logs, not entries in system.log
Seriously, what does this “article” (not that it is even close to one!) have to do with “os”. I am sorry, there are hundreds of bugs in ALL os’s, and we all live with them going through the normal channels for help. So I can write up an “article” about a bug, which has little to do with anything other than it is in fact an OS that is locking up, and fire it off to you to be paraded around the world?
See ya OS NEWS, after years of reading, the signal to noise ratio here has degraded SERIOUSLY!
Same problems here.
Send the /var/log/ to apple.
Reports panicdumps.
No response from apple.
I know english is not your first language but still you really should take the time to correct basic spelling errors, weird use of case/exclamation points etc. I’m not trying to be an asshole, but it makes you and OSNews come off as unprofessional.
…on my brand new Single 1.8GHz G5. For example, loading Quake 2 or NWN after awhile it sometimes goes to a black screen and fails to finish loading the game. The GUI freezes. HOWEVER, You can still SSH into the machine and run terminal programs. This seems to be a problem with the video driver or somesuch?
ALSO, Watching QuickTime movies in Safari can freeze the system in a similar but different way: The machine locks up, mouse is still visible and moveable unlike in the first case. I have not tried SSHing in for the second case.
Apple should fix this g’damnit.
