To make things easier for everybody, no windows programs should be named K*. Especially names that are evil mutant cousins of real words, like K-meleon, Kapital, Konqueror and Konsole. The windows program in this list sticks out like a sore thumb.
The same thing goes for Gnome programs. Only apps written for Gnome should start with a capital G.
At least Be Inc. did something right. The entire API consists of names like BOpenWindow, BThis, BThat. Great engineering!
> Maybe a bit OT, but is there anyone using Mozilla 1.2 beta?

I’ve been using it for a little while, and so far it hasn’t crashed or bugged out. And I’ve noticed at least one nice addition, the ability to have a group of tabs as ‘load on startup’
well, it’s good to have an up to date windows native gecko browser, despite the fact that phoenix is feature rich and great, euginia doesn’t like XUL or rather, XUL doesn’t like euginias windows box.
I said a few weeks ago that Pheonix was doing a great job with their browser (and they are 🙂 ) and I almost forgot about K-Meleon since its been so long since the last update. It feels really snappy and it uses a lot less memory than Moz does. Looks like Phoenix has some serious competition in the end. Its all good though, competition makes better browsers!
Darius I am currently using the xft Mozilla 1.2b with the every infamous Redhat 8.0 and it works great with all the plugins. My only caveat on the XFT is get all the ttf microsoft core fonts first because the labels in mozilla for the title bar text and such looked really odd till I pulled over the Windows fonts from my XP machine. Now it looks wonderful.
Correct me if I’m wrong but hasn’t K-meleon been in this exact same phase for the last several months? They still aren’t releasing a binary officially (you have to check the dev list to get it) so is it fair to say that 0.7 is out yet? Its nice that they finally got around to making a post to the main page though. I think most people (who don’t read the forums or dev list) wrote them off as dead a looong time ago. I’d have to say that competition forced them to make an announcement. My interest in a new K-meleon version dwindled significantly since I started using Phoenix.
On Windows, it is great. Crashed once, when I tried to close some windows too quickly. Don’t blame me, blame them *points to mozilla.org*. Of course, after that incident, I put on the pop-up filter… and bliss.
But I prefer Phoenix. I don’t understand why. It is not faster. It doesn’t feel faster. Heck, it has so much less features (come on, as a Opera addict, features makes the browser)…. Plus, I prefer how Mozilla looks with the Modern theme. I don’t understand!
I am running Mz 1.2b installed on Psyche with 3 bugs so far:
1. First bug: The application icon for Mozilla gone (changed to unknown icons) since I upgraded Mz 1.0.1 (shipped with Psyche) to Mz 1.1 then now 1.2b. Nobody knows why and how to solve it so far…
2. Tabbing problem: If you in the process of opening a new tab while loading some page, right-click close the very first tab will make all the tabs unvisible eventhough pages being reloaded. I did not find any bugzilla on this…
3. Highlighting text in side textboxes and textarea gone weird where you need to refocus, re-highlight to get rid of the unwanted highlights.(not even the page highlight for you where you do not do it)
About performance, yes it is a slight improvement and less known problems since 1.1… seeing to improve for the final build. Moreever Mozilla.org is testing on Mz 1.3b already but I could not locate the source from their site, the source of news is from MozillaZine.
I have not tried Phoenix nor K-Meleon, but will soon.
I dun understand why the K-Meleon has that name… K is for KDE, G is for GNOME and B is for BeOS…. emm… i think if Windows want a name, name is W-Meleon….hehehehe….
Why can’t we get the pronouncation of A for Applet…etc… but in OS terms???
That’s FALSE! Change the title, please. K-meleon developers began working on 0.7 release 350 days ago and km 0.7 is not still out! (Yeah.. It will be released soon and please, let me say that the devel has never stopped)
I’d have to say that competition forced them to make an announcement.
None of the developers made that announcement, dear MrOizo! It was a user that had didn’t even informed users.
But the project was all but abandoned for a year (and was based on a pre-1.0 version of Mozilla), so many have moved on. Phoenix has come along and, IMO, created something better.
i must admit although i’ve been using k-meleon for much longer than phoenix, this dormant spell has really allowed ph to get a foothold, i now use it most of the time at home, it’s a bit bigger, slightly slower, but it is feature rich, and oh so purty. But, of course, Galeon’s still nicer
1 – 0.7 developemnt has not stalled but is still in beta.
2 – the beta is normally only available to those willing to join the developers mailing list (me for example).
3 – the front page of the k-meleon website isn’t updated very often so not much appears to happen even when it is.
I started using the k-meleon beta around July and helped test for me the killer feature – the ability to use Opera hotlists. Personally I think they would have been better to roll out one of the more stable builds as 0.7 and target the new features at 1.0 but hey – not my call.
sorry… was developers.. Btw, it’s truw what bill has said; everybody can join the mailing-list and be informed when new betas are available, but all users should be aware of the fact that a beta could crash your sistem and it’s obviously buggy; for that reason, if you are a normal user please WAIT and do NOT install 0.6.5 release! 0.7 will be out soon.
Personally I think they would have been better to roll out one of the more stable builds as 0.7 and target the new features at 1.0
Personally, I fully agree with you and i think that in the future releases-policy should change a little bit.
K-meleon been in this exact same phase for the last several months
Really??? Then, you should check the Status page (you can find it in the resources section of k-meleon web site).
What makes K-meleon different from any other gecko based browsers is its vast support for macros. You can completely customize the toolbars, document popups and key board accelerators.
From my every day browsing I made 30 different macros with all kinds of usfull functionalities. You can get them here
Some of these macros include, selecting a text and searching in 10 different sites, sending the selected text as the body part of an email, hiding all the images, listing all the images, and so on and so forth.
In my definition out = downloadable … so where is it?
This is the latest available binary,
http://kmeleon.sf.net/files/beta/kmeleon065_beta.exe
but read the dev mailing list to get the URLs for two updated DLLs.
http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/files/beta/kmeleon065_beta.exe
Their logo is awesome.

Phoenix has already replaced this project for me. Recent builds of Phoenix have been just fantastic.
Nice work… BeOS needs something like this, BeZilla is just a little too bulky (IMOP, Mozilla in general is).
didn’t know that this project was still alive.. but who is still using windows these days ? What about a BeOS version
Maybe a bit OT, but is there anyone using Mozilla 1.2 beta? Can you comment on how stable it is (as compared with 1.1)?
Well, they are a little late, we already have Pheonix.
Now if I could just get support for that back and forward button my mouse….

I like Phoenix much more then K-Meleon. Can’t wait for next Phoenix version.

Ya header says it all… Whats the best BeOS to use right now if i want to try Be again? Thanks

a bit late? if i recall correctly, kmeleon was around way before phoenix…..
“K-Meleon 0.7 is Out”

Sorry for my english

I have downloade the latest beta and it looks pretty stable, fast & nice (compared to 0.6 which was so stable and buggy).

try it.. and you will see the difference.
Phoenix is still close to two mbs larger and certainly isn’t any faster. KM isn’t dead yet.
Neo:
It’s named that because it’s a gecko based browser that is masquerading as IE (meaning it has the same style interface as IE).
So why the IE wannabee? Have no own ideas?
At least Be Inc. did something right. The entire API consists of names like BOpenWindow, BThis, BThat. Great engineering!
Well, most libs do things like that, Qt and MFC for example.
And by the way, what does naming conventions for APIs to do with naming of applications???
http://kmeleon.sf.net/files/beta/kmeleon07_rc1.exe
K-meleon is a cute little browser ;but it does’nt
come close to the ease of use and overall flexibility
of phoenix!
