MS-Solaris wouldn’t that be just dandy. The name almost has a nice ring to it. MS wants to get into the big iron side of computing and this would certainly get them there.
This so called “Alliance” between Sun and Microsoft is only temporary. The only thing I can say is:
The devil is in the details. . . and keep in mind how Microsoft treats their so called “partners.” Just look at what happened to Sendo, Spyglass, Sun(Over Java). These are the known partners to have taken Microsoft to court. Lets see how this alliance will hold and how long it will last.
The thing is, NEVER, EVER make deals with the devil; Microsoft being the devil because they won’t even hesitate to turn on you in a second. When will Sun learn?!?!?!?!
I find that this alliance/agreement is just another attempt to gang up on Linux.
Actually Solaris 10 will be a great product. I’ve long been looking forward to a solid system with cutting edge features and Solaris will be right on the spot. BSDs are also solid and their userland feels good, yet Solaris 10 appears to be ahead in terms of its kernel technology and should be more stable.
Unfortunately Jonathan is a lier who doesnt think twice before calling Redhat proprietary and not LSB compliant and doesnt miss the oppurunity to whine about Redhat, HP and IBM all over the interviews and blogs. With him leading the effort its not bound to be very successful…
I wouldnt trust my business to such outright liers. Would you?
First, I seriously doubt that Sun has any love for Microsoft or vice versa. It also makes no sense for Microsoft to buy Sun, nor does it make sense for Microsoft to release their own Linux distribution.
The press surrounding this MS-Sun “alliance” has a lot more to do with strategic product positioning and marketing than anything else. So, Sun and Microsoft can interoperate between Active Directory and Java Server System stuff. Big deal.
Microsoft is the Anti-Sun and Sun the Anti-Microsoft. Sun actually packages Samba, Apache, etc. with Solaris. Microsoft tries to break Java. Sun provides OpenOffice.org. Microsoft keeps Office wrapped up tight. Sun offers a JRE for Linux. .NET is 100% Windows-only. And on and on and on.

No it doesn’t make any sense, and no it wouldn’t the first time something totally senseless happened in the industry either.

Might be a lot bigger deal than many are giving it credit for.

And to make money they would absolutely kiss and make up.
What is it with you zealots? Can’t you see that they understand they both have their place. MS wants to exist in unix shops, and Sun wants to exist in Windows shops. If you think the SunOne directory server is worth anything, guess again. It has to be about the most generic, stripped down hunk of nothing. Scalable? Yes. Versatile….yeah, if you have the time to modify it so that it no longer resembles what it was. They know AD is something alot of people are going to, and they want to still exist in those shops. I can’t believe I keep ready such post. Apparently no one reads Suns release notes for their products, because god knows they replace MS vulnerabilites with functionality problems in their product. Could they keep sendmail consistant from one build to the next, or patch cluster. Wait, did i say sendmail….get rid of that junk and lets look into qmail. I havent had a chance to look at Solaris10 yet, but I am hoping it is a leap ahead, as I know it still has its place, and I dont mind the fact that I dont ever remember any of my Sun hardware having problems. Opteron…lol…I hope this is a good move also, as it looks like the Sparc may one day be gone due to decreasing price and increased quality of processors.
“At least not this week…. I wouldn’t bet too heavy on being about to say this in the future.”
so you agree that Jonathan lied about redhat being proprietary now right?. good. you can sit and home and speculate about how they will or will not turn out to be proprietary in the future.
Great, just great.
This end up in:
Bye Solaris, bye Java, bye SunOne, bye bye.
This looks like the first signals of Microsoft trying to buy Sun. I sure hope not .
how frightening is that? i don’t want to think about it
Here we go……

My two cents. . .

With all the rumours and conspiracy theories lately about Microsoft possibly releasing its own version of Linux.
If this Alliance is taken to the next step, are Microsoft are actually looking to release its own Solaris?
Or making a windowing system that runs on top of Solaris?
Probably way off.. but just a thought.
“Unfortunately Jonathan is a lier who doesnt think twice before calling Redhat proprietary…”
Red Hat is proprietary. Fedora is not. Note the distinction.

This is just PR (but legit) to get SUNW to go up.
There will be some things that will let sun share some microsoft stuff that microsoft cannot in-turn sue.
It’s a great strategy for sun to take advantage of microsoft technologies and use it to their benifit…..
I do not think there will be great collaboration because sun still hates microsoft.
Good job sun
“Red Hat is proprietary.”
Its NOT. name a single proprietary software in Redhat. you cant right?. dont join Jonathan’s lies

I can’t name a single propietary software package in Redhat.
At least not this week…. I wouldn’t bet too heavy on being about to say this in the future.

LOL. Nice attempted speculation-troll. You lost though.
