Linux: Random File I/O Regressions In 2.6

A recent discussion on the lkml looked into a reproducable random file I/O regression in 2.6 compared to the 2.4 kernel. Alexey Kopytov posted the benchmark results, attempting to simulate the workload of a database under intensive load. The tests were tried with all I/O schedulers, including the anticipatory, deadline and CFQ, and in all cases 2.4 outperformed 2.6. Read the report at KernelTrap.

Red Hat Announces New Corporate Desktop OS

"In a sign that demand is growing for alternatives to Microsoft Corp.'s Windows software, Red Hat Inc. will release a version of the Linux operating system and other programs tailored for desktop computers in corporations, universities and government agencies." Microsoft Corp. said on Monday that retail and new PC sales of Windows XP, its flagship operating system, have grown to more than 210 million copies since the product was launched two and a half years ago. The world's largest software maker also unveiled on Monday the latest version of its anti-piracy software for digital files, music and movies, which it said would work with a wider class of online services and devices. In the meantime, a new generation of PCs based on Microsoft's next operating system won't arrive until perhaps 2006, but engineers at a conference in Seattle this week will learn how to build the new machines.

But that really refers to people who work on the Java platform itself. We try to make Java as open as while still preserving the interoperability of Java for the large developer community. Syllable 0.5.3 Released

Syllable 0.5.3 is out and much faster than previous releases, due to a new ATA disk driver, faster graphics rendering and the use of a newer compiler. There are new drivers for ATi Radeon and VMWare video, Yamaha DSE/DSE1 audio and a new USB UHCI driver. Libsyllable and the Appserver have been given an overhaul which gives them a cleaner and more flexible API. More info here.
