“Palm subsidiary PalmSource introduced a new program to help software developers create applications for its upcoming operating system. PalmSource is offering a kit that includes a Palm OS 5 simulator so developers can test their applications on the operating system. PalmSource is also introducing the Palm Powered Compatible Solution logo, which can be applied to applications that pass compliancy tests with Palm OS 4 and 5. The test will be administered by a third party and requires a fee. The fee and availability of the test will be announced early this summer with the launch of PalmOS 5. The logo is meant to help consumers identify software that meets compatibility standards.” Story at ZDNews.
That’s great but what about BeOS?!
Why won’t they listen to us?!
WwBb – We wan’t BeOS back!!
WwBb!
Palm sux, they bought BeOS, and won’t release a new version of BeOS, the best OS in the World!
We Want our lovely BeOS back!
Wake up folks. Palm is a handheld company — period. They bought Be for the multimedia technology and the engineering talent, not to resurrect BeOS. I like BeOS too, but don’t expect any new releases from Palm. They don’t have the resources and it doesn’t fit with their business strategy. Sorry. Helping to support the open source versions is probably the best way to see BeOS continue.
Depending the nature of the outcome of the DOJ/States case, there may be a lucrative opportunity to sell an alternative x86 OS to PC makers. If that is the case then palm would be very foolish to not offer BeOS. The desktop market could be a lot bigger than the handheld market.
personally, i still question if palmsource (the OS unit) is really capable of surviving on its own by selling only a handheld OS and related servers. I hope they can but i have lingering doubts.
I need the keyboard, for confortable use (I don’t like Graffiti) and I have just a good Psion. I don’t want a Palm!
I like and I use only BeOS, but I don’t want more promise by man (Steve Sakoman too) that can’t keep it!
I would like it only if Palm, PalmOS or PalmSource to continue working on BeOS and future release; otherwise, for me, Palm it’s nothing, it doesn’t exist!
