Is it just me or Gnome 2.16 is faster than previous versions? I’m running FC6 test 2 at the moment and it does feel faster. Maybe it’s just an illusion? 😉
Anyway, it’s cool to see Gnome moving torward version 3.0. I just hope they will finally make some kind of integrated config panel and drop a few annoyances like the ugly minimize animation in Metacity
That’s because FC6 is faster, not Gnome itself. The FC6 devs said that they changed dynamic linking. Their whole system is now faster, not just Gnome.
That’s cool then. The Fedora team will probably win the race once again
Gnome does have some optimizations, combined with FC6’s optimizations as well, so its not just gnome.
The ugly minimize animation is replaced in the metacity that uses a compositor already… its not going to be enabled by default in gnome 2.16 and you’re going to need xorg 7.1 with drivers supporting the new features or Xgl. In 2.18, you’ll probably see all the animation affects and I’m sure by then everyone will have new drivers supporting 7.1 fully as well.
is that some day beagle will be light enough to be default in gnome…

Yeah, that helps a lot. The only drawback is that it gets me so excited, I rush out and compile gnome….then break my gentoo
Anyway, the new gnome should be great!
this desktop can now be shown to windows .net developers as it includes mono bindings by default and that they can switch to linux and continue to code C# stuff with mono ;o)
My guess is that people who spend I-don’t-know-how-many-thousand-dollars on a MSDN subscription and a Visual Studio package don’t really care that much about Linux, let alone coding for Windows on it.
True, but a lot of student programmers are out there as well. They get all this stuff for free when at uni but then when they leave they have to pay

2.Like the new launcher properties panel, much more cleaner
3. Bug reports are so easy now, if something crashes it asks you to send the report or make one out, very easy.
4. Deskbar is even better, faster and can be lauched without the need of the panel.
5. New icons look clean like Tango.
6. Disk Usage Analyzer is useful, tell you how big directories are grapical map ect…
And for Ubuntu Edgy Release candidate to play with Gnome 2.16.
Looks like it will be a great version :p
