linux does windows 8. so will we see valve hop on board something like this, sponsoring some hardware platforms? the will is out there to do each component, but nobody is pulling it all together yet.
That’s not so interesting yet. When first open (hackable) devices with Tizen will arrive – that would be something to celebrate. So far it’s rather vaporware, without devices.

Yeah, I have to agree. The SDK has some nice points, but the emulator feels clunky. Given that it’s based on HTML5 tech, I naturally think of webOS and Enyo — which are far more mature than Tizen.
My point was, whatever the software – without devices, it’s not going do much. And if the system will push open devices to the market (where one could easily install alternative distros like Mer/Nemo/Plasma Active etc). it’ll naturally help Linux advancement on the mobile.

There are backing from some major corporations, but at the moment, major push is into Android. Though, if there is going to be a real device, it would properly come into Asia market first.
I would discount Tizen so soon yet.
I know they are backed. Meego was also backed, and devices never came (besides N9 effort). So as I said – until devices will starting coming, this won’t help much.

N9 is/was great, the problem is not Meego, the problem is Nokia. They just “give up”.
From a developer point of view, your statement don’t make sense to me. I need to see what kind of development tools/SDK out there to figure out how serious I should take on a platform.
For a project that still in its infancy, a release of version 1 of SDK is a good sign that this project is getting serious. At least, they (as the people in Tizen) are serious about it.
I don’t think Tizen is expecting a consumer end device soon, but for developers, I suspect some are trying it on existing Android (Linux) devices. If you expecting new devices that run mainly on Tizen, you would have to wait. This is expected from project that just in its current stage.
From a developer perspective, I’m interested in advance of conventional Linux on mobile (not Android, but X/Wayland based). What prevents it at present is severe lack of devices (or you can say drivers/open kernels). Such cases as N9 and upcoming Vivaldi/C71 are rare exceptions so far. Whatever flavor the OS will be wrapped in (Tizen, Mer etc.), if devices will be open allowing easy swapping of the mobile distros and drivers would be possible to update – it’s already great for developers. That’s why I’m not so excited about Tizen updates, since nothing was said about devices coming. However Vivaldi progress are really good news.

N9 is not even running meego, it is running maemo 6, branded as “MeeGo/Harmattan”, the plan was to move the UI layers to a full MeeGo after the N9.
N9 can run Meego however (i.e. Mer based Nemo, which is Meego today). In theory Nokia planned to gradually switch to Meego proper from Maemo 6. But the ill known MS deal stopped them from moving in that direction.

So far Samsung doesn’t emphasize native Tizen APIs at all. On the other hand if they were serious about HTML5 as app platform they would have long joined forces with Mozilla (unless Google have explicitly made such a deal impossible).
So either they’re are not ready porting Bada APIs to or they are busy replicating Android operating environment on top Tizen.
