While I don’t forsee the demise of Microsoft from open source software, I do believe that a sizable chunk of the market will be won over. Microsoft cannot stop the flow of open source, because they cannot control or bully open source developers. Its a different ballgame when you take profit motives out of the equation, and MS can’t and never will compete with that/
In India you can grab a copy of Windows off the street for a buck to two, piracy is pretty high there; so I’m surprised at seeing Linux being described as a cash-saving option. I understand in government/businesses where things are more legit but in the personal desktop market I don’t see the savings.

I’ve heard that supporting new language dialects (of which there are literally thousands in India) is much easier with Linux because you don’t have to wait for commercial support to fit your niche market. So if one person does the necessary translations, then everyone can use it free of charge.

Linux is great as a cheap server OS. Im still not convinced about its usefullness on the desktop. Ive had too much trouble trying to use it as a desktop OS (niggling hardware incompatibilities,software installation problems)

If this is some sort of intellectual debate I’m gonna have to argue that all countries have the best IT staff they could ask for. With millions of people to choose from, sometimes billions, a few of them would have to know Linux. Put them in charge.

You shouldn’t underestimate cultural differences.
India may wish to become the preeminent software producing country. They have several advantages, excellent technical education, relatively low wages and high English language skills.
Why would a software company hire an inexperienced CompSci graduate in the US when they can get a highly experiencedand more qualified programmer in India for less money.
Windows benefits the USA primarily, Open Source benefits the country where it is used.
There is no reason why India, China, Bulgaria etc cannot totally dominate software to the exclusion of western nations. Very little consumer electronics or computer hardware is now manufactured in high wage countries. Within a few years most software may be written in low wage countries.
Hardware costs are plummeting allowing millions more people access. Eventually computers will be so cheap as to be essentially disposable (say UD$50). No one will be willing to pay hundreds of dollars for software to run on a $50 machine.
If I was a western programmer I would be very, very concerned. The barriers to entry for many IT jobs are trivial. There are no teenage surgeons, lawyers or fighter pilots but plenty of 15yo kids can assemble a computer or write decent software. When tens millions of people have a skill it has very little market value.
I remember watching an episode of ‘My Three Sons’ where the father(an aeronautical engineer) made a miscalculation and blamed his ‘cheap Japanese sliderule’ (insert canned laughter). I suppose the same joke now would be ‘crappy opensource software’. The real joke is in 20 years time the US software industry maybe as moribund as the US steel industry and as reliant on subsidies as the hopelessly inefficient US agriculture sector. Maybe they will be making the same sort of jokes about Redmond and Cupertino as they used to about Gary, Indiana.
India is quickly becoming the dominent in technology.
Support of local technology in emerging markets such as India and china will be an important part of success.
That said, apple and MS will need to provide true incentives to both users and the local economy if they intend to fight off open source. Moreover, low cost is more of an issue in developing areas, particularly for the legit interests.
China is particularly interesting. They have already told the cell phone industry to buzz off by developing TD-SCDMA (time division synchronous CDMA).
linux in the developing world is going to make some inroads. Guaranteed. I hope apple has something to counter this.

Fact: Australian Aborigines have access to services not available to other Australians such as education grants, specialist aboriginal legal services etc. If you ever visit Australia you may meet blue-eyed blonde aborigines. I would suggest that Aborigines are far better integrated into society than Native Americans. We have an aboriginal Federal senator (married to a white woman). I agree that we have a lot of progress to be made but it is not government policy to marginalise aborigines.

Fact: Our actual Head of State is the Governor General (just like Canada). The Queen is obliged to accept the advice of the Prime Minister. I might add in the Australian system the Prime Minister has far more power than the US President as the PM also controls the House and Senate. Australian parlimentarians vote as directed by their leader.

Fact: The American colinies were penal colony long before Australia. It was only after the French helped you defeat Britain that convicts were sent to Australia.
I think I would be far more worried about the stain of slavery, systematic extermination of Native Americans and invasion of neighbours than the stain of convicts.
One of my school classmates went to California as a high school exchange student from Australia. He won the American History prize and played on the football team despite having no prior experience of either. What made it ironic is that he was a very average student and only a moderately good Australian Rules footballer back home.
Illegitimate copies are hardly in the survey, so for legitimate users, Linux is indeed a cash saving option. These legitimate usage is not only in the government, but education institutes, religious institutes (e.g. the South Indian Church thinks piracy is stealing), as well as multi-national companies.
