It is in english. Bernd is German, but he manages…
And speaking about videos… Anyone is on MSN Messenger 5.0 or Yahoo! IM 5.5 and has a web camera? I just bought one but I know of noone to test it with! Email me if you have a web camera running in the above apps and 10 mins of time so I can test this thing… Thx..
Yeah right, nice place to put your computing problems, Eugenia. Anyway, you can broadcast it to people without webcams themselves. Just do that to anyone for a few seconds and see yourself. If it works, it works.
This is Koki from JPBE.net, the Japan BeOS Network that organized the event in Japan. We are being /.ed (slashdot.jp) and are having some difficulty with our server load. If anyone can offer a mirror, please email me at [email protected].
BTW, Zeta looks really good and it is pretty refined. We had a good audience of developers, former BeOS vendors and resellers, as well as people from the (Japanese) media, and they all came out VERY impressed by Bernd’s demo.
The demo was in English and there is Japanese translation, so the pace is kind of slow. Nevertheless, the images are worth watching.
You are free to, just like you are free not to read this.
> – If we’d want to watch soap we’d watch AmigaOS
AROS Powahhhh !
OSNews is about every OS, not just BeOS, so why would it be only about AmigaOS ?
And btw AmigaOS doesn’t run on x86 (AROS does, but it’s not a fork).
> – No momentum (I’m just guessing here), BeOS must be the most foreked OS in the history of the universe.
Not that much actually… most of what you think of as forks don’t qualify as they don’t have the original source code to actually fork from it. They are rather rewrites (OpenBeOS), or emulation layers (B.E.OS). AtheOS isn’t a BeOS clone, as its author was always iritated when someone compared it to BeOS.
Really, Zeta is the *only* real BeOS fork. Rather it’s BeOS itself considering the actual owner don’t even care of evolving it.
I bet the reason to why it’s “quiet” about BeOS is because things work the first time, so it’s not necessary to resubmit news about patches and bugfixes…
The video could easily be about 30 mins if it weren’t for the English -> Japanese translation but that was necessary given the location.
I think the best features are the localization features and the multimedia encoding. Momementum or not, this is truly a “self-contained” desktop OS where I’ll have every app I really need. I’m very interested. I’m looking forward to a review in the near future when YellowTab feels the OS is ready.
Bablefish translationa are probably the most fun when the source is Japanese. Where’s my girl when I need her to translate for me…. oh yeah, teaching ESL upstairs… 😉
Nice video – Bernd is getting good at presenting demo’s. I liked how the Installer shows screenshots, SVG tracker with Thumbnails, Bone 8 and just how fast Zeta looks.
I’m definately buying Zeta, they’ve put in a lot of work and I want to reward them with a purchase. I like Beos 5 pro as-is, so I have no hesitation whatsoever with ponying up for Zeta Deluxe. btw it really does look blazing fast..and I can’t wait to rip all my dvds on it while I watch them! ~8|
“Not a chance you’ll see this video. The server is being hammered.”
I was not aware there was a localized Japanese version of Zeta. Cool. Perhaps I’ll have to look at it.
“Not a chance you’ll see this video. The server is being hammered.”
But, I am able to download them fine. It’s kind of slow, around 25k/sec to download.
koki.mp4 = 8.7MB
zetademo.mp4 = 163.6MB
BeOS is BeOS, Zeta is Zeta.
We need mirrors! Post ’em if ya’ got ’em
it’s based off the BeOS codebase. (they have source code)
Is it english? Or is it all in japanese?
Why should I waste my bandwidth.

What better place than a site with 115,000 visitors a day? Someone should be able to fill that description…
Eugenia you should know better than that. Put it in the Windows forums.
But last I checked Eugenia is the big dog around here, and besides, she isn’t forcing you to read this site, you can stop at any time.
After the last three news items about BeOS related news the Linux zealots have been awfully quiet.
Are they spoked, have someone from the dead come back to them and scared them? Probably….
It’s Alive!!!
I would mirror it if
– I could download it
– if I was rich enough to afford the bandwidth cost
– if I could bother about Zeta in the first place 😀

Well. I don’t know. It could be
– We don’t care
– If we’d want to watch soap we’d watch AmigaOS
– No momentum (I’m just guessing here), BeOS must be the most foreked OS in the history of the universe.

You can download the movie on BeShare or via Ozone client…
http://www.yellowtab.com/developers/zetademo.mp4
I can’t play the video :'(
Here are a few players for MP4 files:
EnvivioTV (Windows): http://www.envivio.com/
QuickTime (Win & Mac): http://www.quicktime.com/
VideoLAN Client (many OS): http://www.videolan.org/
The video from Yellowtab doesn’t work for me too. I’ve tried it in DivX Player 2.0 and VideoLAN 0.5.3.
I’m going to download the original one.
http://beos.spb.ru/fyysik/zetademo.mp4
Size matters.
It should be 171470279 with ls -l in shell.
If it is smaller, don’t start download from beginning, use wget -c
Seems strangely quiet on the BeOS front…
Oh, yeah. My BeOS clone will be announced soon, as well.
> – No momentum (I’m just guessing here), BeOS must be the most foreked OS in the history of the universe.
Linux – SuSe, Slackware, RedHat, Mandrake, YellowDog, Gentoo, Turbo… Shall I go on with the lesser-known distros?
Ofcourse I have quicktime, I’m not stupid.
I bet the reason to why it’s “quiet” about BeOS is because things work the first time, so it’s not necessary to resubmit news about patches and bugfixes…
I’d say that’s a pretty good sign =)

AlienSoldier a person, like Zeta a lot! Sugoi sugoi!
Engrish power ^_^

I’ll definately get the Deluxe edition.

I like BeOS 5 pro, too, but I’m hoping that Zeta will support newer hardware and technologies, now that the original BeOS no longer gets updated.
Zeta can also keep the idea of BeOS alive while OpenBeOs and the others are still working towards their releases.
> now that the original BeOS no longer gets updated.
if you mean the source, the source is worked on by yellowtab now.
