Fueled by lean IT budgets that demand results and a successful round of VC funding, Astaro is experiencing demand from small and large businesses that want an integrated solution for security with no vendor lock-in. DesktopLinux.com recently caught up with Astaro CEO Jan Hichert to discover that the company is not only developing Linux-only solutions, but has embraced open source practices, philosophy, and is even considering offering an OS-development fund.
…i have to say its very nice
best commercial firewall type distro i have seen and in truth the pricing structure isnt half bad compared to more dedicated hardware
Astaro, being a European company cause me some concern when considering the product. My main focus was technical support for the current implementation and auto updates. After running ASL for a couple of months, and requiring support during that time period (and getting it) I realized that it was what I was looking for. Amazingly, there is a strong global community supporting the product as well. I never had a problem with it, and kept finding new features in ASL that I wanted to implement. For example the VPN stuff is amazing, and allowed the company I was working for to operate 24/7 – especially for the road warriors…

Community support for a commercial product?
C’mon, how much are you paying these people, really?
Perhaps all Microsoft needed all this time was simply a nicer EULA.
I’ve been using it for ~1-year now using the non-commercial license and it is a very good product indeed. It’s regularly updated and the forums are extremelly active and friendly.
microsoft doesnt give windows away for free for non-commercial and this is a very special purpose OS distribution. you wouldnt type a letter to your grandmother on ASL.
