From MacMinute: “Apple has released the first update to Xcode, its set of powerful developer tools for Mac OS X. Version 1.0.1 addresses an issue in the Xcode IDE that could potentially lead to data corruption or the loss of files particularly when source files contain illegal characters.” Additionally, Apple also released a new Panther security update in regards to a vulnerability with the Terminal.
Seems like the release of Panther was rushed. This is the second bug that can cause data loss. Apple needs to sort things out. Mac users are going to be less likely to rush to upgrade if they are concerned they will lose all their data.
Is this new?
You can’t expect to get all the bugs out by release.
There are likely a lot of bugs that would take quite some time to find if they just sat around looking for them. Sometimes it’s easier to release what you think to be ‘stable’ and let the millions of users find the bugs.
I don’t think anyone has the right to complain until apple refuses to releases updates/patches.
The problem is with the developper tools which the majority of photoshoppers won’t have installed, and concern files with illegal characters, which the majority ofprogrammers stay far away from anyway.
No big deal.
And data corruption does not necessarily mean “losing all your data” much more likely a single source file can be rendered useless than the whole filesystem.
Please, if you do not work for the National Enquirer or and AM radio station, stop dramatizing.
I don’t have to patch my mac as often as my windows machine. Windows update has been a really big thing lately… and to avoid the hassles, I switched to OSX all together….hope the update madness won’t follow me to OSX.
“No big deal”!!!??!!
Huh dude it is certainly not until something like that happens to you. Yesterdee, iTunes stuffed up ” /system/config” files on my Windows 2000 machine. Hardly managed to get system to bootup again ,but fckin lost all my registry settings. Well there ya go.
<RANT>
When was the last time an OSX machine had a corupted netinfo that prevented a bootup? How often does such a registry problem “happen” in Windows? How many security updates and patches do you see DAILY on each? Really think about it, be honest.
A big difference exists between a bug and an overall design flaw. OSX has a nice foundation. I see these problems as minor.
BTW, iTunes for Windows has an updated version.
In other words, “NO BIG DEAL”.

One Mac user posted his experience where he had backed all his data, family pictures etc onto his firewire hard drive. So he basically lost everything, well I suppose he could pay a data recovery expert to get him for it. THat is going to cost though.
Then the update to Mac OS 10.28 broke networking for some people. So tey could not download the patch to the patch.
Just seems that Apple has bee sloppy recently.

Someone actually defending a company for a bug that causes data corruption!
ROTFL! You gotta be kidding me!
I’m convinced. Mac users ARE brainwashed!
With all of those developer running Panther alphas and betas, it is unfortunate that none of them caught the data corruption bugs. Maybe Apple needs to beef up in-house QA. Or, maybe make betas available to the public for a minor fee.

Everyone else seems to defend their own platforms, passionately… Linux users will do the same as Mac users and Windows users. All I know is that I yell at my Mac MUCH less than any of my other computers.
Macs seem to behave more fluidly. They’re NOT perfect yet compared to what I have used, it’s the platform I use the most (day job I do use XP). It “seems” to have the least setup issues and problems while running. All I can say is work with one for a few weeks (if you can).

At least with 10.2.8 (to say nothing of MacOS 9 and before), I don’t have to worry about losing my resolution settings at bootup or getting a BSoD for some odd reason, like I was getting in 98SE on my last PC.
Worst thing(s) I’ve had happen to me since I got this G3 B&W/350 is:
1) my son’s 8.6 partition takes *forever* (several minutes I’d guess) to shut down or reboot. It just sits there. Don’t know why. It just does.
2) my G3 B&W won’t chime. It works fine otherwise. Sound and everything. I have to do the Opt-Cmd-P-R (Reset PRAM) to bring the chime back.
3) When I double-click on some programs or folders, my G3 B&W lets out this really annoying high-pitched whine. Not out of the internal or external speakers, but inside the case. I have no idea what is causing this, but I am kinda suspecting the internal heatsink blower, as that is about where the sound is strongest when I put my ear to the case.
These are all things I can live with… and… NO SPYWARE OS (XP) TO DEAL WITH, EITHER!!! Yea!

Everyone in my webpage design class love the new OS and haven’t said anything wrong about it. Most of the bad rants are coming from pc folks just complaining again out of jealousy of Apple.
I still claim that a bug in a developper tool that only happens when using illegal characters and that render the source file unreadable is not a “SEVERE DATA LOSS RISK”
It’s a minor, low profile bug and it has been corrected.
Nothing to make a fuss about, hence No Big Deal.
XCode is a 1.0 app, so expect to see a lot of small updates very quickly. Has the code base stabilise, update frequency will go down.
And by the way, I am not a Mac zealot. I would have posted the same answer in a thread about a minor Visual Studio bug.
Please people stop playing clueless AM station announcers.
How long did it take MS to release SP1 for XP? Not days or weeks… we all just put up with the foibles (that were all blamed, by MS, on NVidia). I had spontaneous reboots resolution probs apps not working. et al. While I do believe most of my probs were 3rd party related… there were (are) too many problems that still effect my day to day XP use. It became a pleasure to go home to my Dual G4. I have since aquired an ol’G3/333 laptop and it works so much better with Panther. On my old Mac at home (PowerComputing 150 w/G3 card) I stopped at sys 8.6… too many incompatibilities and issues going to 9.x.x. Even my ol’PC (PII/400) is staying at Win98. I don’t want grief… I don’t need grief… My Macs help by giving me less grief than ANY PC I have ever used. And Panther has blown me away… The ol’G3 laptop has sprung to a more usefull life thanks to Panther. The graphics are better, the UI is better… Even though my PC at work is faster (XP 1GHz w/512) I still enjoy working on the ol’girl better…
