This is great news! Now the only thing that worries me about OBOS is the app_server. It is one of the hardest parts to make and to my knowledge there’s no-one working with 100% focus on it atm. Or am I wrong?
It would be sad to see OBOS fail due to the lack of a good appserver.
I wish OBOS could use the Syllable app_server code somehow. But to my knowledge that not possible due to the different licenses.
Oh well, this is good news anyway!
Can we hope OBOS releases around the same time as Zeta?
(I know there is no answer, just a fun thought.)
Its nice to see obos coming along. I remain supportive. I consider the complete lack of interest by large corporations to be a blessing.
those same corporations which claim to be advocates of linux tomorrow.
at least release the kernel and app server under an open source license so that they can distract Microsoft
Why do people think that Palm is interested in releasing a desktop OS to “distract” Microsoft? Palm sells hardware and an embedded OS, they don’t care what goes on in desktops.
Please give me back my Be…
I have always been skeptical of this project because of how closely they want to replicate a commercial project. It has always seemed too dangerous to me.
Which is why OpenBeOS is currently just a working name. A new name has been chosen and IIRC, will be announced at the upcoming WalterCon. The Creative Design Team is also working on new branding, icons etc. Although personally I will be amazed if they can create nicer icons than BeOS’ current ones.

Actually I believe Adi Oanca is working on it full time now, as well as one or two other people. As you mentioned it is one of the hardest parts, which is probably why we aren’t hearing much about it. Other than Darkwyrm the other devs don’t seem to be much into keeping blogs, which is shame as they usually make for fascinating reading, although at the end of the day I’d prefer they spend as much time as they can coding >:D
In regards to the news item, this *really* is fantastic news. The Networking Kit, along with the Kernel and Application Server are among the most difficult. With this major milestone in the networking kit, we are seeing more tangible evidence that OpenBeOS is moving forward at an ever increasing pace!
Any comparisons between this networking stack and the one that comes with BeOS 5 (and, presumably, Zeta)?
Adam
Palm has expressed interest in the desktop market. If you keep up with PalmSource stuff then you would know that Palm is interested in a licensee that would offer Palm as an embedded desktop operating system for notebooks or desktops citing it loads faster since its embedded.
That probably sparked alot of things.
Also… About OpenBeOS. I THINK ITS GREAT! But why not support multiple user logins? I know its to be compatible with RC5 but still….. What ever happend to the New Name contest that they had a while back? What happend?

Companies say a lot of things. Be said that focus shift was a temporary thing. Opera said that they would update the beos version. GoBE said…..
Everyone who want to do something for BeOS shouln’t buy Zeta. Its better to donate something to the OBOS Team.
Great work everyone, especially Waldemar!
This is a nice first step, but I think it’s way too early to ask for a benchmark comparison between this pre-alpha stack and R5’s or Zeta’s.
WRT the app_server, there are a few people working on it on and off, but AFAIK only Adi 100% since Darkwyrm had to halt development for health reasons. Nevertheless, barely a day goes by without a cvs commit to the app_server.
You can sign up to receive daily cvs digests at http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/open-beos-cvs . You get on the general OpenBeOS mailing list here: http://www.freelists.org/cgi-bin/list?list_id=openbeos

Multiple user logins will probably not available i R1 (Release 1) since this shall be as close to BeOS R5 as possible, as I have read and been told. When it comes to R2, changes will be made. I guess they need to plan multiple users before any release, but I dont think we’ll be seeing that in R1.
The new name will be announced at WalterCon as said earlier!
It seems that soon i can use OBOS stack instead Bone:)
Do I understand correctly that isolinux in German is the ONLY place to get a BeOS Max cd?
Yes, we should contact OBOS Network-team to prepare NSPR for OBOS.
I’ve been waiting for this
Proper BeOS icon and proper osnews view back!
Congratulations, Eugenia!:)
Great news
/me feels a JLG comment coming up
Now the Zeta icon again? Use OBOS or Be icon pleaaasse…
Anyway, it’s lovely to see things are slowly coming together. Valdemar has worked a lot with this and now pieces finally coming together… I guess more and more focus can be put on app server pretty soon =). I’ve even seen people submit code to the Game Kit ^^
Good job OBOS dudes..
I like the name OpenBeOS it sounds real good and I don’t want it to be changed. It’d be nice if they could just keep it as it is.
