The latest Syllable Development Newsletter is available, covering work in October. Highlights include driver updates, kernel improvements and a Quake 2 port. Elsewhere, after almost a month of daily work, Mozilla Firefox has been successfully ported to SkyOS (still in beta). This native port will bring a much-needed professional web browser to SkyOS.
Can Firefox on SkyOS go into fullscreen mode?
Now that the Firefox team have implemented single-window mode in Firefox. It will work well as a fullscreen browser.
i’ve been requesting this at the skyos forums for months now…i’m glad to see it finally ported. skykruzer was apparently very unstable and was replaced by links, which is fine and good for simple web browsing, but it seemed to have lots of problems when posting stuff to forums, bug trackers, etc. awesome work Robert. can’t wait ’til b9.

heard that it was consider buggy in firefox and UI option to enable this has been removed for 1.0. you can still set this in about:config but its considered “experimental”
Its still beta; not all features have been ported yet, so relax before asking about features π

Thanks for the info. Well the extension mostly worked, so I will try it out.
Sure. go ahead.
meanwhile its good to see syllable pick up speed again. they have a very good range of drivers already

Which issue is it in?
It’s nice to see stuff like this get recognition. LXF has had mention of Syllable before, along with OpenBeOS and the other *BeOS projects.
LXF #36 Janurary, 2003 ‘Desktop Dreams’is an article about Syllable, Cosmoe, OpenBeOS, and Blue Eyed OS. Unfortunately none were included on the CD/DVD.
LXF #45 October, 2003 ‘What on Earth is BSD?’ introduces the open versions of BSD to those Linux users who are new to the ‘alternative’ world. FreeBSD 4.8 is included on the CD’s and DVD.
One of the reasons I buy itis because they occasionally go outside the Linux world and give much needed public exposure to projects like this.
Thanks LXF!
thought it was different projects , SkyOs a AtheOS wannabe but in much better shape.
Syllable is a AtheOS fork …
what has a port of Firefox to SkyOS to do with the Syllable OS ?
jgb_jgb I think the point was to post all of the syllable news and the one skyos news at the end because it’s just one news item as opposed to the bunch of syllable.
Of course that is pretty good.
ok, I see
good luck for SkyOS & Syllable then
>what has a port of Firefox to SkyOS to do with the Syllable OS ?
Absolutely nothing but I guess since both bits of news were kind of small, the editors chose to present them under a common heading. It makes sense in that Syllable and SkyOS while completely separate and unrelated, both have similar goals and are at similar stages of development (more or less). Personally I’m keeping an eye on both of them.
Anyway, I think porting Firefox is an excellent idea and I wish Syllable would follow their example because at this point one of the things they have in common is lack of decent web browser.
and I would like to try out both of them and have fun using them.
Oh and Zeta too.

Just what I was waiting for π
“Which issue is it in?”
John, it’s issue 59 (mentioned in the text). If you’re in Australia, that issue should be on the shelves soon!
“One of the reasons I buy itis because they occasionally go outside the Linux world and give much needed public exposure to projects like this.”
DLazlo, glad you’ve enjoyed the BSD and Syllable coverage. Keep an eye out for the next few Hot Picks sections; you might enjoy what I’m including… π

“what has a port of Firefox to SkyOS to do with the Syllable OS ?”
Nothing, but it’s easier to compact two small stories together. I submitted the SDN news and Eugenia added the SkyOS text — it’s a good way to keep the front page from being overly cluttered!

Thanks I can’t believe I missed that, and I was looking for it too :b
Thing is, this news article is now sorted in the Syllable archive. Perhaps its time to make it possible to put articles under multiple topics.
As long as they try to stay away from any unixness I wish them good luck, I feel a need for an alternative OS which goes it’s own way instead of just following the old path. As for SkyOS, I think it’s intresting but a commercial OS on the x86 market so enormously dominated by Microsoft? Good luck…
Is there a definitive list of supported h/w? (Video cards especially). I don’t seem to be able to find it on the site. Maybe It’s right in fornt of me…
Are USB DSL modems supported, or any plans to do so?
I love the look of SkyOS, and might give it a try
USB Modems wouldn’t work yet because while there is a USB Stakck it has been disabled but the new one which will be much better will be enabled in Beta 9 and should have support for USB Modems.
Thanks for the info
On the video card front, my gfx card is an ATI IGP 320 (Radeon 7000 level card). Would SkyOS allow resolutions of 1280x1024x24 with this card, do you know?
To answer my own question, and to tick myself off for not googling first, the h/w list is here:
http://www.skyos.org/hardware.php
And my card is supported.
