IMO, it all begins with HW support. No HW support, and nothing else really matters ’cause you can’t get the rest of the OS going (if it’s critical enough, of course) or the lack of support for “x” impedes critically on your use of the OS.
Naturally, some HW items are more critical than others (WLAN vs. irda support, etc)…notice, I’m speaking out of frustration while troubleshooting a “it worked once” wlan setup on Suse Pro 9.2….now it works for ~ 20 seconds before the USB key powers down. Cheers!
Good hardware support, low latency, bug fixes and the like …
All this would have fall in a large contributors/developers/transaltor/… community.
