Apple Computer this afternoon seeded developers with build 7S210 of Mac OS X 10.3.7. With this latest latest build, Apple has asked that developers focus their testing efforts on audio, printing, storage or audio-based FireWire devices, and graphic intensive games that utilize OpenGL.
Looks like Apple is spending quite a lot of effort in optimizing the OpenGL drivers. The 10.3.6 update included some updated drivers that did show some improvement in games. http://www.barefeats.com/os01.html
The article mentions “improved DVD Player performance” with ATI Radeon 9800 cards. What on earth does that mean? How do you improve DVD playback?
Well, you know, DVD video needs to be decoded. It seems to me that “improved DVD Player performance” may mean that you’ve improved the decoder to work more efficiently. If could mean that you’ve developed improved algorithms to remove compression artifacts, or make the video run more smoothly with less available processing power, or even interpolate extra pixels while playing at higher resolutions.
Of course, “DVD Player” is also the name of Apple’s OSX application that plays DVDs, I believe. So, maybe they’re just saying they’ve worked on that program, fixing some bugs, improving controls, whatever.
Maybe this means they just make use of the ATI’s deinterlacer capabilities.
More support from a company that puts my hard earned cash to good use. At home os X is a joy to use. At work, alas, Windows is dictated by IT policy.
What else can I say… 10.3.7 will just be one more, much anticipated, OS upgrade for me to download! WHEEEEEEE!
Apple is my Atari, MacOS X is my GEM, and My 466MHz G4 DA is my 1040ST. It just don’t get any sweeter than that…
Unless it was an Atari.
WHOA! A 466MHz G4 Atari computer?!? Oh, if only life were THAT nice to me! *grumble*
