Engadget reports: "First unveiled nearly a year ago at Macworld 2007, the MacBook-based, Wacom-modified Modbook has definitely seen its share of delays, although in the days and months since, the 13.3-inch slate has gained the distinction of being one of the few pieces of non-Cupertino, Apple-approved hardware. The world's first OS X tablet can be yours immediately starting at USD 2290."

Ars has reviewed the new Santa Rosa-based MacBook, and concludes: "All in all, the new MacBook is shaping up to be a worthy replacement to my old PowerBook. In combination with Mac OS X 10.5, the most polished iteration of Apple's operating system, the MacBook is a joy to use. Even Omniweb, my favorite but much-maligned web browser, is snappy, and the Core 2 Duo processor appears capable of handling anything I throw at it. Certainly for someone with my fairly modest computing needs (word processing, web browsing, data manipulation, light graphics work, and media playback) the consumer line does what I want and does it well."

Apple sold 1.1 million iPhones during its fourth quarter, the company said in its results statement on Monday. This brought total sales of the iPhone to 1.39 million since its launch and pushed the company's revenue to USD 6.22m (GBP 3.04m) for the quarter. The good news was not solely to do with the iPhone, however, as the company also reported shipping 2.1 million Mac computers, representing 34 percent growth over the fourth quarter of 2006. Apple 'exceeded the previous quarterly record for Mac shipments by 400,000', the company said in the statement. Additionally, News.com tries to look beyond the marketing.

The internet is abuzz with the news that Apple intends to break iPhones containing third party applications. Unlocked phones are also likely to be victims of the next software update. While community reaction is generally negative, one blogger suggests sending an even stronger message to Apple by boycotting Apple on October 1. If you're running the Installer application, you may want to hold off on any iPhone firmware updates.

Columnist Bill Thompson at the BBC asks whether the time has come for Apple to be put under the EU microscope in the same way as Microsoft has. "If Apple was serious about building a music industry around downloads and digital devices then it would open up its devices and interfaces to allow greater innovation and greater competition."

"With the latest release of Apple's office productivity suite, iWork '08, the Pages application moves into the ranks of full-fledged word processing applications. Previously known more for its page layout capabilities than for its word processing capabilities, Pages now enables users to switch seamlessly between writing and designing documents. In addition, the application offers 140 document templates and a snazzy track-changes feature, both of which work to position iWork '08 as an apt rival to Microsoft's Office 2004 for Mac in the OS X-compatible office productivity arena."

AT&T and Apple may face an uphill battle prosecuting hackers who untether the iPhone from the AT&T wireless network, says BusinessWeek. While in USA legal problems might arise, in Canada the scene is alive and well. We received word that PureMobile will offer unlocked iPhones to its customers, and will soon be hosting a competition to give some away for free.

Ars has reviewed the brand new iMac. They conclude: "The Intel Macs are fast, the majority of apps have been released as Universal Binaries, and Apple's product line - including the new iMac - is in a good place. The iMac is also competitive on price with other all-in-one PCs, so if you absolutely love the all-in-one form factor, the iMac is one of lower-priced options available. If you've been holding on to your Power PC Mac and waiting for the right time to make the big switch to Intel, the appearance of the new iMac marks an excellent opportunity." CNet also has a review.

Apple has released new iMacs, with a new interior (up to 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo) as well as new exterior (thinner, with a black back, as well as black 'eyeliner' around the screen), including a new keyboard, during a press event in Cupertino today. Apple also released new version of its iLife and iWork suites. iLife has seen updates on all its applications, while iWork has also received a new spreadsheet application called Numbers. Update: The Mac Mini has been updated too.

I was there, the first day, buying the iPhone, after months of reading all the speculation and argument about it. I was actually on the fence on it. When I walked into the Apple store on June 29th, I wasn't even certain that I'd be buying the iPhone. I had some serious concerns. But I made the plunge. I bought it, and I've been using it heavily ever since. With one month clocked with the iPhone, here's my road test report.

Apple earned a profit of USD 818 million on revenue of USD 5.41 billion for its fiscal third-quarter ending June 30, the company announced Wednesday. Apple sold 1.764 million Macs and 9.815 million iPods during the quarter, and 270000 iPhones in that product's first 30 hours of sales. In addition, Apple has released a new Leopard build.

10ZenMonkeys has interviewed Steve Wozniak. When asked about Bill Gates, he replied: "I've only spoken with him briefly a couple of times. I admire him, he admires me. Good lord, I'd never written a computer language when he had written a BASIC in the early days of hobby computers. And I thought, 'Oh my gosh - a computer with BASIC finally makes a computer that people can use for things'."
