IBM makes a TON of money from patents (real patents, on devices, not just software bullshit). They are a HUGE research and development firm, and it’s one of their bread and butter items.
No way they’d sell this off without a plan to replace the revenue with something better, or perhaps a new combination of technologies.
My guess is the paper-thin displays will be showing up at your store soon.
IBM has about 3000 people who only do research. They simply do not have enough resources to exploit all of the ideas that they come up with, and some of the ideas do not align with they’re already established businesses. Every year they make about a billion dollars liscensing intellectual property. This deal just happened to make the news. It’s nothing out of the ordinary
I’d think they would only patent in the US, EU and Japan to cover main bases. If a counter patent showed up from somewhere else, it would have an impossible time to topple those 3 but would have nuisance value to its owner.
Last time I had a patent filed, I think the company spent $5k for EU, I’d guess you could get most things patented for <$20k but for something really important, lawyers will spend alot of time on it.
