The high street bank today apologised to NetSurf users for locking them out of their web bank accounts, and re-enabled their access. HSBC said it now recognises NetSurf and RISC OS, adding: “We welcome all standards compliant browsers and platforms.” The move was welcomed by punters, who were amazed that a global corporation had responded positively to the needs of a niche platform.
It’s nice to see a corporation acknowledge a screw-up and correct the issue. Very good.
Not really. They just hunted down the goon responsible, gave him a kick, and then tried to announce that their faceless corporation is always on the ball and welcomes alternative operating systems (by having systems in place to block them at will).
All they did was untick a checkbox somewhere. Some other IT related cock up will happen next month. Is it not already apparent enough given how banks have been so slow to take up Firefox support, and worse Safari?

What else would you want them to do? Usually corps hid behind thier size and never admit there is a real problem.
And way too often the person responsable for a bad decision never gets touch. If they found him then all the better.

And compare to most large corps they are!
It wouldn’t take that many users threatening to take their business elsewhere to make a sharp point in someones butt. Great result though!

You try and use Opera/Firefox for their business banking website.
You have to use IE or Netscape.
Just like Google!

Umm…OSN Works perfectly with Opera/Firefox (as does google).
Maybe the ebanking site doesn’t work with elinks, but name a few that actually do?

Google is by and large optimised for Firefox. Nowadays when any new Google browser based tool is released, it will work straight away for both Firefox and IE. Support for Opera tends to occur a little later.
Remember Ben Goodger the Lead Developer for Firefox has now worked for Google for nearly two years. Firefox is effectively Google’s house browser
So put an item up on here or on digg and create a stink about it – which doesn’t seem to have been very hard to do in this case! People PoweRRRRRRR!
