Windows Microsoft released Vista Beta 2 for public consumption. It does not require a Key but will expire on June 1 2007. You can download the 3GB ISOs (or from here) for 32bit and 64bit architectures.

They could bundle software for common tasks that is spyware free, for instance.

Antitrust concerns make this a non-starter, I believe.

Yeah, they where going to have Onecare for free but they had to remove it because of anti-trust issues. Kind of a shame, they messed up once and because of it there being bullied. I would say just punishment except it's really the users who are paying and not them.

In the short term perhaps yes.
In the long run however, I think it's the other way around, due to antitrust, there is valid competition in the market, which I would believe (atleast to some extend) will force better software for us.
