Just when you thought fancy effects on Linux desktops started to get remotely understandable, focussing on Aiglx/Xgl with Compiz, a fork of Compiz is announced: Beryl. This is the logical continuation of the popular compiz-quinnstorm branch, used by many Ubuntu users. "During this summer, and during the last few weeks, some major additions were done in compiz-quinnstorm, bringing a whole new decorator, cgwd, which was designed to be fully themable, and a new settings backend, csm, which intended to drop most of the gnome deps - there were other reasons for this, but this is not our current subject. Consequently, we reached a situation where it's quite impossible to come back." The main reason is general unwillingness to work with and unresponsiveness to the developers of the -quinnstorm branch from the official Compiz guys.

Thats not my experience at all.
I've been running quinns version for many months now, and I think it's very stable. (both on aiglx/xgl and with intel i915/nvidia)
For Ati users there is still some problems but that is due to the buggy drivers from Ati, so don't blame that on Quinns verion of compiz.
On the contrary however, I tried the original compiz version on Suse 10.x and that one had a tendency to crash from time to time. Oh, the irony.

PocketNow interviews Marc Dillon, and there's an interesting note about why Jolla is keeping the display properties under wraps: "We're leaving some of those details out because we do understand that there are a lot of really big players in the market and they tend to take certain components in the market and dominate them. We created the ability to actually be able to run Sailfish on multiple hardware displays and be able to swap components, so this is part of the demand and supply planning phase. We are committed to this industrial design which is a 4.5-inch display, an 8 megapixel camera on the back and a front-facing camera at the front, and the exact specs of the display we'll provide when we're close to delivery." Something you rarely hear anything about.

The Wii U is turning into the 21st century's Virtual Boy.

"In NixOS, the entire operating system - the kernel, applications, system packages, configuration files, and so on - is built by the Nix package manager from a description in a purely functional build language. The fact that it's purely functional essentially means that building a new configuration cannot overwrite previous configurations. Most of the other features follow from this." Interesting approach. A Linux distribution, sure, but with some very refreshing ideas about system configuration.

Appfour added, among other features, C/C++ support to its new version of AIDE. From Android-IDE, "Now you can write parts of your app or your whole app in C/C++ on your device. AIDE supports the Standard Android NDK toolchain (GCC 4.6 + Bionic, STL, ...). No changes are necessary if you want to build an app developed on a PC with Eclipse. C/C++ development is fully integrated: Build errors appear in the error list and files can easily be navigated to with Go to file. The editor supports C/C++ syntax highlighting."

Ars nails it: "The answer is that Google did announce what amounts to a fairly substantial Android update yesterday. They simply did it without adding to the update fragmentation problems that continue to plague the platform. By focusing on these changes and not the apparently-waiting-in-the-wings update to the core software, Google is showing us one of the ways in which it's trying to fix the update problem."

Glass is getting some love at Google I/O as well. New applications have been released - Facebook, Twitter, Evernote, Elle, Tumblr, and CNN. Perhaps more interesting: the newly announced Google Glass Developer Kit will allow offline applications and direct hardware access - great for hacking and expanding Glass' potential. Truth be told, this fork is only happening because the Novell guys never changed their closed source tendencies. They developed XGL in a box and then said hey, we've done it right for you, so don't worry about participating. Well, they did the same thing with Compiz for the most part, but unfortunately it got out in the wild and did a little mating. Anyone that has really used the quinn packages knows that they are incredible, and she and her band of merry men have pushed Comiz to were it should be with all those great plugins. Yeah, the current release may be a little buggy for some, but that's what happens when you remove the gnome dependencies once and for all. They have releases almost 3 times a week with bug fixes and speed improvements. Her configuration tools and skining api's are great. If Dave isn't careful, Beryl is going to end up replacing Compiz all together, because those plugins that the comunity keep pumping out really make all the eye candy usefull. It's one thing for the Novell guys to talk about code quality, but if your not giving the people what they want, they will go elsewhere. That somewhere else for me is definitely Beryl, becuase it's a great example of the power of open source development. Oh, for anyone thinking she just a lone rebel, you very much mistaken, becuase their are many developers pumping out plugins and fixes daily. www.Compiz.net
