OpenStep, GNUstep The Etoile team has published a progress update on the project. They are currently preparing the release of version 0.2 of the Etoile live CD, but on top of that, they are also busy developing new applications. A font manager, an alt+tab application switcher, hot corners, and more. "Étoilé intends to be an innovative GNUstep based user environnement built from the ground up on highly modular and light components with project and document orientation in mind."

It looks like GNUStep is finally getting somewhere. Étoilé is attracting attention, and that's something very important for any open/free source project.

Now all GNUStep needs is some more applications and a better integration with GNOME and KDE and the unix desktop has it's third major player. Beautiful! ;)

That's the beauty of GNUStep, since it's similar/compatible to OpenStep/Cocoa you get a lot of apps practically for free. Just read this from the Etoile blog to get the point:

>> TermX: a terminal emulator ported from macosxterm.
>> It works both on GNUstep and Cocoa.

I don't know how many projects are out there for NEXTStep/OpenStep/Cocoa/GNUStep but freshmeat lists 364 Objective C projects right now.
