It does digital zoom, up to 4x.
We hope to enable optical zooming (audio noise) and other functions as well with the CHDK software, but this is still under heavy development for sx200.
I bought this camera after reading Eugenia's stories about it and it is indeed a very impressive unit.

It depends. If you are a consumer who shoots consumer stuff, it can be, yes. But if you are shooting mostly artsy stuff, then no, since almost no one zooms and records at the same time because it looks amateurish.
Personally, I don't care at all about the no-zoom while recording function. I am more concerned about full manual control.

I understand that optical zooming while video shooting would ruin sound capture, but then you might not care about sound.
Or it could let you choose digital zooming - with a 12Mpix sensor it could do about 12x digital zoom and still have full resolution; some optical problems (like focus) would be magnified, though, but on the other hand others would diminish (like barrel distortion).
