Apple John Gruber has found out that cross-compilers are no longer allowed in iPhone OS 4.0. "My reading of this new language is that cross-compilers, such as the Flash-to-iPhone compiler in Adobe's upcoming Flash Professional CS5 release, are prohibited. This also bans apps compiled using MonoTouch - a tool that compiles C# and .NET apps to the iPhone. It's unclear what this means for tools like Titanium and PhoneGap, which let developers write JavaScript code that runs in WebKit inside a native iPhone app wrapper. They might be OK."

As a game developer, this sucks. I hope Adobe and all game development studios push apple really hard for this. Imagine what would happen if Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo were to forbid cross platform code! It would be kind of like "Only exclusives allowed, sorry!"

Yes, game platforms are definitely the obvious comparison, and nobody could imagine their 'maintainers' (MS/Sony/Nintendo) would BAR developers from using whatever tool they want.

But seriously, Apple CAN'T equitably enforce this because they would be removing most of the most successful/impresive games on iPhone which they have been promoting alot. This is going to be the equivalent of New Orleans ordinance against 'manhandling a sandwich', BS laws that are only used against those who meet the unstated true category of public (private) enemy... just like "flying while arab". But who can develop under this regime where you don't really know when "the law" will be applied to you? (presumably they won't apply it to their own MacRuby project, but still)

Funny. That is exactly how the games industry works.

Many publishers do require exclusive content in a specific console.

Yep, this is a direct hit at people like Unity3D. Since Unity3D are actually making a system to develop games for a lot of devices at once. And that is exactly what Steve wants.
