If there's one thing I miss in the current smartphone industry, it's design. Honest to good, real design. We basically see one boring slab after another, void of any true identity, whether it's iPhone, Samsung, or any of the others. In this boring world of grey, black, and the occasional white, Nokia is the jester, coming up with its own unique designs and crazy colour selection. Today, the company unveiled the Lumia 920 and 820 to continue this trend.

The software my kid uses on his Windows PC is nothing to do with his school, it's just some educational stuff my wife wants him to do to get some extra education.
I know they only use Windows at school, so I wouldn't be surprised that parents/kids that don't use Windows will run in to some problems at some point in time.
For me this isn't a big deal as I'm technical savvy and have loads of idle hardware. It is nasty for people that don't have these mental and physical recourses. In that case I agree with you that, certainly on the educational level, open and free standards should be the way.
But I don't think a Nokia Lumia is part of our kids education. Any normal camera with a memory card should have no problems getting them on a Linux PC.
As I mentioned before apparently you can hook up a Lumia to a Linux PC and access its media.

Official Apple statement on PRISM and privacy: "Regardless of the circumstances, our Legal team conducts an evaluation of each request and, only if appropriate, we retrieve and deliver the narrowest possible set of information to the authorities. In fact, from time to time when we see inconsistencies or inaccuracies in a request, we will refuse to fulfill it." This is basically Apple re-publishing their earlier statement in a more official manner. You either believe it, or you don't.

The open source Contiki operating system and its commercial Thingsquare distribution are making strides towards the connected home. According to a Computerworld article, a new LED light bulb manufacturer is putting small computers into their light bulbs. Each computer runs the Contiki OS, which gives each bulb an IP address and allows them to be controlled with a smartphone application. To connect the bulbs to the application, the bulbs use both Wi-Fi and the much lower power IEEE 802.15.4 mesh technology.

Fully and utterly agreed. My Nexus 7 was blazing-fast and awesome for a few months, and at some point, it just started sucking. Just like that. I've tried loads of ROMs, and nothing helps.

Not that I had any choice because when you sell a company you don't get to decide that. Obviously, the board and shareholders decide that.
