Windows != MacOSX.
It is a completely different ecosystem and userbase.
It is a completely different ecosystem and userbase.
Yes it is. The difference is that 6 years ago Apple laid down the law with their developers and said either get on board or get left behind. Then they followed through with it... The power balance between Apple and their developers changed drastically after that - in other words Apple took the position that THEY know best what their users want, and as a developer it is your JOB to deliver it. If you are a developer, and your idea of what you think your customers want conflicts with Apple...
You lose. Automatically.
That is WHY it is different.
Im not saying that Microsoft is definitely going to go this route. Im definitely not saying I agree with this approach. What I am saying is that the "Metro is the future" mantra MS has been preaching for the last year sounds very familiar to me... The next step will be app signing for desktop apps and putting them in the appstore. Sound familiar?
If that ends up happening (I hope it doesn't), just don't be surprised when (as a Developer) the power you hold over Microsoft to deliver things they way YOU want them evaporates. You wont matter anymore, all Microsoft will care about is the end user - developers are just a means to an end...
Microsoft has always been a company that went out of their way to cater to their developers. Metro is (imo) a distinct change in that strategy, long term at least. It is a wolf in sheep's clothing...
Maybe Im wrong. Well see I guess.
