In 9front, we host almost all parts of our development process on 9front — the git repositories, the mailing list, the ci/cd, the web site, and everything else. (The exception is #cat-v IRC) We use the system regularly, both when hacking on the system and in our personal use.
Personally, I write most of my code on Plan 9, read my emails there, and often drive Linux from there. I run my home network off of a 9front CPU server, and host my websites off it. I know other people around 9front do similar.

It clearly shows, too. If you dive into the 9front community, you’ll quickly realise everything runs on 9front, and that does create a sense that the operating system is capable, and that its developers have confidence and pride in their work. Exploring 9front myself, it feels awesome to see that all the documentation I’m reading is being hosted on 9front machines.
I’m going to relaunch the OSNews Gemini capsule, this time hosted on 9front, and since countless 9front users host their own Gemini capsules on 9front, I feel confident that I’ve got people to talk to when I need help. I just need the time to actually sit down and figure out the minutiae of 9front, because it truly is unique.
Users know that the developers understand the system’s strengths and weaknesses because they have experienced them firsthand. It also creates a self-sustaining ecosystem where documentation, tools, and communities are all built around and dedicated to the system, reinforcing its unique identity and capabilities. It is a testament to the developers’ belief in their creation.

This has to be the weirdest “AI” ad-bot comment I’ve seen on OSNews. The comment is on an article that, even by this website’s standards, is obscure and won’t likely see as many eyes as more popular content. The text of the “AI” comment is just slop that can be inferred from Thom’s writeup. And all of that just to link to a sports-themed online game portal?
I’ll be so happy when the “AI” bubble bursts.
Morgan,
IMHO new accounts shouldn’t get comment links until they’ve been active and participating a while.
I’m sure there will be a downturn that separates AI business models that are viable from those that aren’t. However I think it’s optimistic to assume that these adbots land on the non-viable side. While I agree it’s awful, this use of AI probably makes money.
Have you been getting AI scam calls too? There too, using AI to screen victims may well be a profitable move. Please give my regards to the staff who used to perform those jobs and got replaced by AI (/sarcasm).
I have, and I fight fire with fire. I use the “AI” based “screen” feature in Android to start a bot chat with them, and if I have time and need a laugh I’ll let them talk to each other for a bit before I hit the block button and end the call.
On-topic, this has made me want to attempt a full 9front based setup of my own as a side project (as if I need any more of those). Once the dust settles from moving into the new house and I’ve unpacked all my computers and network equipment, I’ll dive into this with both feet. I was going to give away my 26U rack as I haven’t used it in quite a while and will struggle to find room for it at the new place, but I think it will be the perfect all-in-one station for a full 9front stack.
