The OpenZaurus Project has released a new version of its Linux-based software stack for Sharp Zaurus PDAs. OpenZaurus 3.5.4.1 is based on a 2.6.16 Linux kernel, and includes some 13,000 “ready-to-install” packages. Nine Zaurus models are fully supported, while others can be updated selectively.

That’s alot! But are they all usable? I mean, some applications may require too much space on the screen or simply too much memory? I don’t know since I don’t own a PDA but if it all works great, I’m really impressed.
I’m thinking about getting one btw, mainly because they arent so expensive compared to mp3 players and they can be used to listen to music as well. Just a matter of time
Speaking as some one that has a Sharp Zaurus, clamshell model.
Their have been significant improvements since the last release (and the one before that).
Powermanagement appears to work fine, though there was an odd problem with one of the RC’s where X would go back to the login sreen…
Regarding the packages, and how many are available and whether or not they are usable.
Some of them are not, they just take up too much ram, however all of the command line based utilities and servers, work a treat, and there ARE lots of app’s geared towards the embeded market which are nice.
I’m going to download this release, and see if the logout issue has been solved, if not I may attempt talking to the dev’s again (though last time, they were quite unpleasent, may be I got them on a bad day
)
