Microsoft announced a sharp reorganization of the company into three divisions in order to streamline decision making and speed to market. The software giant will realign several existing units into three core divisions - Platforms and Services; Business; and Entertainment and Devices - that better represent Microsoft's goals, said Steve Ballmer, CEO. In addition, MS released SP2 for Office:Mac 2004.

A startup on Tuesday unveiled plans at the Apple Expo here to build a distributed supercomputer cluster that could use some thousands of Apple's Xserve servers. The high-performance network will be installed along Europe's internet backbone, startup Omneta said.

Chip firm Intel said it is developing an ultra low power version of the 65 nanometre process technology specifically for notebooks and other small devices. The firm said that with transistors on some chips over the billion mark, it has developed tech which it claims will cut down leakage by 10 000 times.

Mozilla has reacted to a Symantec report issued on Monday which said serious vulnerabilities were being found in Mozilla's browsers faster than in Microsoft's Internet Explorer. The study was conducted over the first six months of 2005. Tristan Nitot, president of Mozilla Europe, hit back by claiming on Monday that when a vulnerability is found Mozilla's "ability to react, find a solution and put it into the user's hands is better than Microsoft."

Apple CEO Steve Jobs and the company's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing Phil Schiller have just ended a frank and open discussion with European media. Jobs said: "We don't know how having OS X available for PCs would affect Macs", and promised, "we will have technology in OS X for Intel so that it cannot be installed in other PCs". Jobs also confirmed Apple's switch to Intel processors remains on schedule, saying: "We said we'd be shipping by next June and we are on track to have that be a true statement".

Toshiba said today it would offer Cell-based hardware development kits in April 2006. The reference platform comprises Cell and support chips and is geared toward "digital consumer products and communication equipment that draw on the powerful broadband capabilities of the Cell microprocessor" and its "unsurpassed multi-tasking and real-time processing functions", as Toshiba put it.

SCO, recently best known for its Linux litigation rather than its Unix operating systems, announced that it was releasing an advanced networking platform to provide feature-rich consumer and business digital services for smart phones and other intelligent mobile devices.

As expected, Sun said its new Sun Fire V490, V890, E2900, E4900 and E6900 servers are powered by UltraSparc IV+ processors with a clock speed of 1.5 gigahertz and run Sun's latest version of its Unix operating system, Solaris 10. The servers will also run earlier versions of Solaris.
