Let’s go!
I hope that OpenDocument will gain support quickly.
I hope that other states will follow Mass lead and no loger rely on MS for their document formats.
I know I’ll never buy MS office again unless it *fully* supports this standard.
We the people need to lobby the various companies out there to raise awareness. I just sent a ‘comment’ to Apple to get them to support OpenDocument.
We also need to send our govt (local, state and federal) information about this.
OS News is messing with my posts.
I wrote MS (M followed by a dollar sign). It seems to have ‘removed’ the dollar sign and turned it into an S (the letter).
Maybe MS (M dollarsign) is in bed with osnews????
Or maybe OSNews is just trying to raise the (apparent) mental age of its contributors. It does similar things with expletives, and I agree with their decision to do so. This is supposed to be a serious technical news site; you would expect people to be mature enough to not cuss or use infantile abbreviations like M-Dollar for Microsoft.
While I fully agree with your point that M-Dollar is somewhat childish, and personally refrain to use this abbreviation, I am also concerned about this: you have a *right* to be childish every now and then, M-Dollar is a clear sign of what a person thinks of Microsoft, and that person is entitled to expressing his ideas, all the more so if it’s in an innocuos form. Moreover, if the overall tone of the comment is infantile or annoying there’s already a user-regulation method (scores) to moved it down where more exigent users won’t see it.
I really don’t think automated censorship is the way to go, at least in this case.

Agreed, but the editor of this page has all rights to not wanting to see M-dollar on his/her/their pages, and as such can remove theese at will.
Also in §4 in the terms of use, it says:
”
Do not post comments that merely disparage a particular OS or company. Some examples of sentiments that are in violation of this rule: MS Sucks!, Apple is dead, people who use KDE should be shot, etc. If you hate Microsoft, or Apple, or Linux, you may still talk about your hatred at OSNews, but please do so with a reasoned, on-topic argument.
”
You have agreed to this by posting here.
Funny how O$New$ commonly posts new$ $torie$ that obviou$ly di$parage$ an O$ or $oftware product. I $en$e a double $tandard here. Ju$t becau$e I enjoy the u$e of the dollar $ign do$en’t mean that I am talking down any O$ or $oftware product.
Thi$ i$ infringing on my free $peech!

A serious technical news site does not mean censoring and/or manipulating the free expression of their readership. If you have a problem with spelling an acronym for a large software company with a dollar sign, maybe you have the impediment.
Maybe MS (M dollarsign) is in bed with osnews????
Maybe this will explain it;

MS earned that designation thru ruthless tactics being all about the $$$$. A guy with more $$$ than god is still out there trying to get more???? Why should MS revert to MS…that’s just an infintile! After all, maybe we don’t use MS for MS so we don’t besmurch the good state of Mississippi, or Mandrake Soft, or mighty Spuds…. So please editors, if MS reverts to anything put it back to Microsoft… it will save all lots of typing. [and save us time while B!$^ing about how they waste our time!!]
because it changed every occurance of M[dollarsign] with MS!!! I understand swapping curse words out so we don’t get blacklisted by our office firewalls for somebody’s stupid post, but this is really silly!!
MS M_$ MS Microsoft MS. Smith…
I think this still applies;

I hereby propose, we now reffer to OSNews as O$New$.
Some are already predicting that OpenDocument will win out as the new world standard in office file formats shortly… http://www.dwheeler.com/essays/why-opendocument-won.html
While I’m a big OD supporter for both practical as well as organizational reasons, I don’t think you should be looking for a winner here or not.
I’d like OD to be the default format people use and think of, and I will work towards supporting it so that it is, though I’m not going to claim something that isn’t so right now.
I think the reason everybody wants to believe the Sun Google thing will amount to more is that there’s a lot of weight in the CxO’s to names like SUN and Google. There’s a lot of potential there for a serious shot at the big leagues. Google has the power to easily create the killer microsoft file importer… All that’s lacking is the will to upset them. google could put a desktop search the likes Bill only dreams of on everybody’s computer overnight! Using OpenDocument as the prefereed file type would be icing on the cake. Having played with Picassa, Google could do a really good search tool if they wanted. Combine with java Google is now building a platform… and a cross-platform at that.. rather than writing plugins for each browser and desktop, just write to the Java/Googlebar platform. personally, I’m not a big fan of Java, but what’s needed is a “line in the sand” to put everybody on the same page. Get enough people on the same page and soon Microsoft will be the only one NOT with the times.
Opendocument has a lot of potential for office templating use… far better than anything Microsoft has come up with. The abiity to script Opendocuments with anything will take time, but ultimately once the tools are in place will be unstoppable.

Can you give an example or point me to a discussion of this? I’m working on a project that could benifit greatly from robust templates and scripting, and so far OOo seems to be the winner.
Let’s get this thing rolling. I will use it once it’s supported by OpenOffice/AbiWord. Until then I shall promot it.
It seems they’re not the only one:www.spreadopendocument.org and besides, neither OpenOffice.org nor the OASIS are indeed part of it:

Currently we have no mechanism for organizations to join. So they aren’t a part of it not because of a lack of interest, but because we are only currently allowing individuals to join.
