Foresight, one of the few distributions using the Conary package management system, which got fame for being the first distribution shipping with GNOME 2.12, has a new release. Important improvements were done on the laptop front: “Added laptop-tools, which includes some nice wireless drivers, NetworkManager, GNOME Power, and ndisgtk (GUI for configuring windows wireless drivers).” Also, Foresight now uses the Tango icon set by default. wow they’re really nice, hopfully the test of the system pulls through on the design and makes it just as nice.
Conary sounds like an interesting package management system. How many applications are available through it compared to, say, the Debian or Ubuntu apt repositories?
I respect Foresight because they are not afraid of trying new stuff.
Can anyone testify to the stability of this distro?
I am currently using Gentoo on my laptop and it has been stable as a distro as I could ask for. How about Foresight? Before I download and install it I’d like to get a couple people’s first hand opinions on how stable it is.
I ask because with all this new technology, it doesn’t seem like stability is the first thing on their mind. Which is fine with me, but I would still like a OS that is stable enough to do day to day work on (i.e. I hardly ever shut off my laptop).
I have used and tried foresight linux many times and found it to be very stable.
Have you used it on a laptop? It seems like they intend for it to see some use on a laptop. I am downloading the iso’s now and will be installing FSL on a compaq presario 8100t. I am a little nervous about my wireless card. It has the IBM stamp, and I think it uses one of the atheros drivers. I’ll see if I can get it to work.
That’s a 2800T not 8100T.
I just couldn’t stand the brain damaged RedHat installer that Foresight uses – it had major problems
All the screenshots shows the stock Gnome icons, and they are rather dull. I’m using an unofficial Tango theme (missing icons added) on my Gentoo desktop, and it does make the desktop more pleasant without overdoing it.
A bit like KDE without the sharp edge

I rarely get excited about a new distro as a happy ubuntu user but I like this distro from the looks of it. I am downloading it now to try on vmware.
The distribution system makes a lot of sense, plus the howl thing looks to fill in a long time Linux gap (if it works)

I’ve been following development of this distro for some time now, and am eager to finally try it (hope to shovel free some disk space soon). I just posted this so people not frequenting the forums get to know about this in advance, so that they’re not put off by this bug which should be fixed soon anyway 🙂
