“I have already written about configuring my FreeBSD IPsec gateway and workstations. In this article I will show how I configured my Windows XP box to use the same gateway. You might ask why I’m writing about Windows XP on a website about FreeBSD? My terse answer is because I can. My realistic answer is because it will help people. It’s something I did, with my FreeBSD gateway. I use XP on a regular basis. Use the right tool for the job. Sometimes that’s XP. Sometimes it’s FreeBSD.”
At least someone is mature enough to see the real issues and doesn`t turn everything into a “my os is better than yours” shouting match.
People have to remember that OS`s are our tools, not the otherway around and yes there are times when even Xp has a time and a place.
Good article about Ipsec too.
I’ve been talking on this the last days on IRC, but last I tried I never got it working, awesome “news”, I’ll definitly take a look at it. Would be great to know how to connect it to Linux machines aswell but this might give enough knowledge to figure out how to fix it for Linux aswell.
How does this relate to IPSec VPNs? Will it let me connect to a VPN without using a 3rd-party client?
Did you see how he had to explain why he is using XP? These are the worst years for software industry because of the alienation created by 100s of lame OSS apologists like Stallman.
Kudos to the author to stand up for the right tool for the right job and ignore stallman breed.
Sometime i feel that GPL apologists have such biased views that it has made them equivalent to zihadis of islam. From Zihadis…only islam shall live… all other shall die…doesn’t it sound so similar to… Only GPL shall live…all other shall die…
Amen.
The same could be said about gay marriage. I’ve noticed that when anyone, anywhere, anytime is for gay marriage, and says so, no one questions it. If in the same situation someone states that they are against it, everyone turns to look at them as if they’re a leper, and they all expect an explanation.
What if I’m just against it, period? Why do I need to justify my own opinion? We still live in a free country, don’t we? This is much more apparent in the editorials of any major paper. Whenever someone writing to the paper is against it, they always feel this need to write a huge explanation as to why. The pro-people don’t ever write an explanation.
I hate double standards.
I get sick of the explanation too. They always spend 10 sentences apologizing for using XP when we all know why they’re using it: They need some Windows specific program.
I see no reason to apologize. I use XP every now and then. I’m also against gay marriage .
And OSN is dieing again…
Excellent.
And yes, it almost looks like OSN is running on Windows 98.
As to the gay marriage, it’s very simple. If you’re against it, you’re basically for denying people a freedom that won’t affect your own freedoms in any way. And no, “but it’s harmful for society” is bullshit – people that claim it normally get lost when asked to explain why they think so (by giving reasons other than “I don’t like it”).
The same can be said about people who want to outlaw free, open source or proprietary software.
How about this? I’m against gay marriage because when you apply the word “marriage” to what I consider to be a completely illegitimate relationship, then you lessen the meaning of the word itself.
It’s like passing a law that would require all dogs to be referred to as “people”. If I suddenly had to call both you and a dog a “person”, then the word “person” loses some of its meaning, doesn’t it? From this point on, I will be less proud of getting married knowing that there are other people out there with illegitimate relationships who can claim the same thing.
That, and two men f–king each other is disgusting no matter how you look at it.
IIRC at least in England this is not even called “marriage”. But it isn’t the word that matters anyway – it’s additional rights that the people receive.
From this point on, I will be less proud of getting married knowing that there are other people out there with illegitimate relationships who can claim the same thing.
This is the stupidest thing I have heard lately. Is the goal of your marriage to be proud of it? And why should your feelings regarding your marriage be disturbed by other people that have no relationship whatsoever to you or your marriage?
And why do you care about men f-cking each other? It’s not like you’re forced to look anyway.
You should really grow up and learn to not care about some things.
“The same could be said about gay marriage”
Whatever …
You have been awnsered already by others in this forum…
And, nobody force you to marry with a gay.
MS force the choice of the customers with monopolistic atttudes, almost forcing them to use MS software… Thats the rationale!!! not the sophism that some people invent to try to justify Windows.
“We still live in a free country, don’t we?”
Not Sure… What country are you living in?, Do you think this Site and forum are in your country, or belong to your country? Do you think the readers belong to your country?
If you live in in the USA, as i presume, do you think you are more free than the rest of all us?
The awnsers are NO, NO and NO..
This Site is not for Northamericans only.
If you are from the USA, You are not more free than people in many other countries (but more that in many others).
This is visited for people from plenty of countries. I guess you can say its international.
I’m not gay , and i’m not very interested in gay topics, but in my country gays can marry between themselves… They are more free than in the USA, therefore.
More and more administrations in my county, and others are moving to Linux and FREE software, in a quicker pace than in the USA, so in IT terms my country is more free than the USA… too!
You talk about freedom, but your statemens indicate that you are not that much for freedom!!!
You want freedom … The free software gives you freedom, not like Windows and MS thet force you to use teir software tru monopolistic tricks…
Noibody force you to use Linux. So why anyone should be forced to use Windows???
I use Linux, BSD, Windows etc in everal machines of my own, but i want nobody to force me to. Just want to use them if i want, this is not always the case …
Angel–Fr@gzill@
Whatever …
Only that R Stallman proposes liberty and jihadist propose restrictions, like the monopolistic closed code software companies…
So your comparisons are just sophisms …
Angel–Fr@gzill@
Allow me to sell you all a clue at a reasonable price.
The reason for his “apology” is that he’s posting on a site called FREEBSDDIARY.ORG.
His “apology” would have been out of place if the site had been called ipsecdiary.org or vpnforbsd.org or some such.
And, what does Stallman and the GPL have to do with FreeBSD?
By the way, if you look at the list of topics, you’ll find only 2 Linux ones and 7 featuring Windows, so the MS family get more than equal time on a BSD-centric site.
In my second example of a website that should have required no apology, vpnforallOSdiary.org would have been appropriate.
How can we be biggots when we`re trying to say that it`s good to use all os`s ? (or atleast thats what i was trying to say in the first post)
I dont see any reason to bring up the fact that it was posted on a bsd site,it was after all about getting another os to communicate thru bsd,am i wrong?
I do agree with your stallman and gpl statement,i knew someone would have to drag that in even though it wasn`t anything to do with the topic at hand.
So here it is,i dont use a lawnmower to cut my hair, even though it is bigger and more powerful,i use hairclippers.
Figure it for yourselfs.
<sarcasm>I hate when someone looks at me like a leper just for touching every nice girl’s ass. After all, they don’t get hurt. So, let me do it and don’t tell me I’m a monster or something</sarcasm>
What most bugs about Windows is not the license. It’s the way Microsoft works and the load of problems Windows does to every other computer in a net. If there were no Windows virus trying to infect every computer that connects to internet it would be MUCH faster. If PC vendors had not been tied to selling ONLY Windows for years we could be in a more “biodiverse ecosystem” with more support by the hardware vendors to more OSs. And look, MacOS, AIX, … are closed source too but aren’t hatted as Windows. Ask you why.
Well, if you’re against it, then don’t do it. But don’t foist your views on those folks who do.
“If PC vendors had not been tied to selling ONLY Windows for years we could be in a more “biodiverse ecosystem” with more support by the hardware vendors to more OSs”
This is a good comment, yes windows is prone to virus`s and all the other systems are hardly affected by it.Look at the market share i think it`s something like 80% for windows.Ok so what am i getting at,well in the last year Mozilla Firefox has been grabbing more market share and there have been alot of flaws found and exploited.
So think people need to look to the future here and realise that being that popular makes you the biggest target.
I dislike the seeming badge of honor bestoyed on people who smugly say: “right tool for the job.”
Whatever. The implication of such a statement is that there are no other concerns about non-free software except that it does the job. How about supporting the business practices of a convicted monopolist with a terrible history of abuse of their position in the industry?
Even if you’re not the slightest bit intersted in the concepts that underly free software and have no qualms about using non-free software the average person might still find a good reason not to support MS. Although this goes against the grain of what’s acceptable I’ll say it anyway: technical merit is not the only consideration in choosing software. You should at least consider the license under which you can use the software and the vendor’s reputation and business practices.
You may find that what you once considered to be the right tool now looks a little less attractive.
Ok mr 12 year old Anonymous (IP: 12.215.117.—),where you get this stupid idea of the “morality” of using a os be it free or non-free is beyond me.
No it doesn`t look more or less attractive using a tool from a company that has had convictions.
If you walk around your house maybe even look at your mouse, your monitor, even your clothes you`ll realise that most of what you own comes at the price of your so called “morality code”.Thats right all the stuff you lovingly have high moral attitudes about are probably made in some nice sweatshop somewhere in the third world.
Maybe when you fall off your high horse onto your nice carpet made by the poor bleeding hands of some abused worker somewhere you`ll realise what utter crap you talk. You wanna bring in morals to a conversation (yes it was a conversation) and act all high and mighty, think on this old scottish saying.
“if you smell crap maybe your nose is too close to your own ass”
