Apple plans to release new ad “placements” as soon as the holiday season, according to a message sent to developers on Tuesday inviting them to an online session to encourage them to buy ads.
The new spots represent a significant expansion in Apple’s advertising inventory, which is focused on its App Store. In recent years, Apple’s advertising inventory has been limited to one unit in the Search tab on the App Store and one on the search results page.
Let the milking commence.
I’m shocked the existing app store doesn’t have paid placement currently. I thought that was already the case.
Me too? When I search for something in the App Store on my iPhone, the first result is always (almost always?) an ad placement, not necessarily the thing I was after.
chrish,
Ad blockers have been extremely effective for me on android & linux. I’m so thankful for them because it really is frustrating to be constantly bombarded by ads. I don’t use IOS, can anyone speak to the effectiveness of adblockers there? In particular, does apple allow developers & owners to block apple’s ads?

Gotta say, the one war I’m loosing is the one on spam calls. I’m at my wit’s end. The numbers are all faked rendering callerid blacklisting and services like nomorobo 100% pointless (since the numbers don’t belong to the spammers). I’d be blacklisting legitimate numbers and I’ve even gotten spam calls from numbers on my contact list purely by coincidence. And the vast majority of my legitimate callers are “unverified” via STIR/SHAKEN so I can’t even block calls based on that. I’m so disappointed in the telco industry for a problem that has been decades in the making.
I’m considering a whitelist/IVR screening service that takes the call and forwards it to me once they’ve passed the menu figuring most bots won’t get through.. Thoughts/ideas?

Tim Cook be milking the company and its users like the good “operations” guy he is. You’d think that for a company that’s getting flack on the sameness of its new models (compared to its old models) and for declining software quality, they’d not do moves like this. But nope, that’s not what they teach MBAs, let’s “increase shareholder value” some more.
More domains to add to my PiHole blocklist.
They are increasingly serving ads from paths within existing services that provide value making pihole style blocking not feasible. The arms race to make the internet usable again is heating up.
jimmystewpot,
Indeed. The whole reason ad blocking works is because missing ad resources still let you get the content. But if advertisers *really* wanted to be dicks to the ad blocking community, they are able to apply a lot more force. Like verifying ads were downloaded before giving access to the goods. The web (and apps) may become less efficient and less robust as a result, but that’s the nature of the beast when ad blocking is in an arms war. with advertisers.
Even in Outlook app on Android, MS have implemented add. You can see that it is an add, IF you look close. But it is disguised as an email, and you can not mark it for deletion the normal way. You can only remove by swiping.
These add’s are simply…. Unacceptable. And yet we some how let them enter our private property.
