The Syllable desktop operating system project announced that they have started selling professional-quality CDs through a Syllable shop at online print-on-demand publisher Lulu. Additionally, these CDs will be available at Syllable’s booth on open-source conference FOSDEM. In other news, Syllable’s software site Kamidake and documentation site, Syllable User’s Bible, both got an overhaul. And lastly, the Syllable VMWare player has been updated to include Syllable’s developer’s tools.
So should they be having a stable release within a month or two of now, or are they just confident enough that the beta is marketable just the way it is?
A stable release is years away; Syllable isn’t even feature complete.
The Premium CDs have been available for years now; since release 0.4.5. The only difference is that now they’re produced by Lulu instead of me scribling on a CD-R. It simply reduces our overheads but produces a more professional looking CD.
Until Syllable hits release 1.0 the Premium CDs are intended for people who want to support Syllable (& get something out of it) or those who don’t want to download 400MB+ of software (Syllable & all of the available binary packages) We don’t intend to market it to end users just yet!
as always, you guys could use more help.
… it would work on my system.
I have tried all of their previous releases and none work on my system. Another comment has said that it isn’t even feature complete – true – and this hinders its usability – BUT – it has come a long way from it’s AtheOS beginnings 🙂 I would buy a CD just to support the project.
If you could go to our forums & tell us what problem you had (Did the CD stop booting? Did the video fail to initialise?) and what type of hardware you’re using (Video card, motherboard chipset if known, CD-ROM drive if known etc.) that’d be a great help. It’s the only way we can track down and fix bugs on all the different hardware platforms out there.
I’m considering buying it, just to test something else than the live-CD. Personally I like Syllable a lot, even though it’s clearly far away from feature complete.
But try and resize the windows, move them around a bit, and you’ll see that quite a few things are working remarkable well.
Perhaps it only happens for me, but it always crashes when switching to another decor or changing the timezone. But apart from that it’s quite stable on my system. But more than many other “stable” OS’es.

is there a torrent for these images. the last four times i’ve tried to download either of the images (dev or plain, 2x each) they just stopped downloading after 23.3 mb
I’d say go ahead and try to download the image again assuming you mean the VMWare player image. I just completed a download of it and was averaging 628KB/sec.
if anyone has a completed download and wants to make a torrent, i’m more than willing to dl and help seed.
Axel,
Where did you download the image from? Do you still have problems now?
The cilinder.be machine did have some problems last night, but they should be resolved now
Axel,
I’ve noticed the same issue when I tried to download this image at work. We are using a proxy here, maybe there lies the problem… Are you using a proxy?
I’m on it! I love VMWare specifically for reasons like this. I’ve been curious about Syllable for quite a while now.
Still It is a very primitive OS. Besides why don’t they allow their premium CD to be for free instead of 10 $. Even the light years mature Linux distros do not charge a dime for their OS. Be aware that their Basic CD is simply a primitive form of their OS;I mean It will not be able to install GRUB on its own!! You have to do it yourself, all from a command line @ the console window.
VMWare Image is much better though. Their file system is based on BeOS though its not compatible at all with BeOS applications!! It has Unix like directory but It’s not a Unix OS. That why it’s Unique
If you want the free image, download it. Most people do. We distribute the ISO from Sourceforge and link to it from several places on our website. The Basic CD is exactly the same as the Premium CD; same installer, same operating system, same manual GRUB installation. The only difference is that the Premium CD also includes all of the currently available packages, which can also all be downloaded from Sourceforge.
Like I said, the Premium CD is just something we do for people who want to support Syllable or people who don’t want to download 400MB+ of software.
still very unfinished, but it has SO MUCH potential! Reminds me in some ways of BeOS (the potential, that is). Development is “slow”, so get involved! These guys like helpers – there IS a pecking order, but show your worth and you’ll make it no problem. Go Syllable team.
It reminds me more of Amiga, but whatever
