Yellow Dog Linux version 4.1, which has been available directly from Terrasoft Solutions since early January, is now available for free download from their various mirrors. This is essentially a recompile of Fedora Core 4 specifically for PowerPC’s, with extra polished support for Apple’s Macs.
YDL guys were supporting PowerPC from the earliest days, you’d think IBM would come to the rescue and give a boost to these guys and push YDL instead of Redhat on their PowerPC servers. Poor YDL is now left to dry without Apple powerpc machines.
Don’t forget Genesi’s Open Desktop Workstation, which YDL also sells.

1GHz G4 PowerPC, Micro-ATX, AGP, OpenFirmware, Gigabit ethernet, 3 USBs.
I’ve been looking at this thing with great interest for a while. I suppose Genesi, YDL and the whole PowerPC camp is having a rough time with Apple’s move. But the ODW is just an excellent concept. And they list 9 OSes in addition to Linux that “have or are being ported”. I wish them and YDL the best of luck.

AFAIK, IBM’s policy is to be distro-neutral. Besides, YDL isn’t “Enterprise” Linux.
I’d be willing to give this a shot if there was a DVD iso out there… the whole 4 CD sets is getting old in this day and age of DVD’s

Right, and Redhat EL4 “based off FC4” is??
Come on, this is just pathetic how big boys will play with big boys and the little ones have no one to help them become big boys.

In fact, RHEL4 is “based off FC3” to be precise – it’s basically FC3 “baked” for several months longer w.r.t. testing and also certified with various server hardware (e.g. HP, Dell, IBM). Plus RHEL4 comes with support (phone/Web/patches for 5-7 years) as well.
You’d have made a better argument about RHEL4 vs. CentOS 4 – it’s surprising that YDL didn’t base their latest distro on CentOS because it would have a direct “enterprise” lineage in that case.

Sorry, that’s just how the “Enterprise” (notice the quotes) market works. We may not like it, but we can’t easily change the behavior of all those PHBs out there.
I was looking at YDL as an option for a 400 mhz G3 PowerPC that I had bought for $12 (more like a steal!). It didnt have an OS on the hard drive, so I turned to Linux. This really helps me out, although I wish there was a live cd for me to try out.
