Ars reviews the Dell Inspiron e1405— a Core Duo laptop priced at USD 800. It concludes: “Taken for what it is, the Dell e1405 performed well in our testing. It’s suited to general-purpose use of all kinds, but its integrated video will leave gamers cold and its all-plastic construction might keep true aesthetes at a distance. Still, for general use, it’s not clear what others features could possibly be expected at this price point, and the machine is especially recommended to those who need power on a budget.”
So this is OS news how? (Hey someone had to say it)
Looks like Macbook flamebait material if I ever saw it. “Let’s post a similar specc’d Dell as a macbook for cheaper and watch the flames rise”. Not on OS News thanks, I read plenty of sites where I can get info on hardware releases, and this site isn’t one of them.
Come on… get over yourself. Just because it is called “OSNews” doesn’t mean they can’t include a little variety.
Basically, this is exactly the contrary. Just search for macbook pro and macbook reviews, you don’t see him complaining there about the review.
But if GOD FORBID someone wants to review another piece of hardware, that’s lame and suxx0r and an attempt to flame mac users ( poor Thom, these days there is always someone accusing him of wanting to troll mac users by posting an article ).
I don’t think even Apple hardware should be reviewed here, I didn’t notice before because OS X is tied to the hardware. The second Apple drops new hardware it’s on Digg and Slashdot within seconds, I don’t see any need to discuss it here, besides OS X.
Also, the laptop in this article is in many ways better than the Macbook. Someone has to compete with Apple, and it’s good that Dell are doing so now; but there’s little OS news to discuss here.
“You didn’t notice”? Not to be picky but you commented in both and even talked a lot about the hardware here http://osnews.com/permalink.php?news_id=14974&comment_id=136044 .
And I agree with other posters that osnews is better with variety, if there are some hardware reviews per week, it’s nice.

Verity makes everything better, more articles, more updates, better reading.

Yes truthfulness, is good for a news site. However, given the topic at hand, you were probably looking for the word “variety”.
doh, I’m not a verry good speller.
It also talks about the 2 cores on the processor and how an “OS” could benefit. It said it felt snappy and as more OS, primarily Windows, support this, it will be better for the consumer to have a faster machine.
During May 28th and July 2~3rd(?) Dell provided chinese users with T2300E CPU instead of T2300 in 640m default profile but they DID NOT mention it anywhere. All of the information either from their websites or sales said that IT IS T2300 only. Luckily, some cute people spotted this. This is a kind of fraudulence I think, so do others, but not Dell guys. They first said that T2300E and T2300 are the same, which I believe Intel wouldn’t agree. Then they said users could return the notebook to Dell and get the rebates in 40 days, but I simply don’t like this idea. A LOT of people are involved, most of them don’t need Xen or other great works, so what? Don’t dell me, please!
The T2300E replaces the T2300. It costs less, and draws less than half the power as the original.

What i dislike of PC is their complete lack of style.
They are bloated with buttons, stickers, unuseful led and so on.
Why can’t pc maker take example from Apple’s notebook ?
For example, on my beloved Benq notebook i’ve got 5 stickers on the front, 4 “extended” buttons i’ll never use and 7 led i’ve never watched !
Apple notebook are just simple, elegant and clean.
Not everyone wants to be part of the “me too!” crowd.
i have an HP pavillion. It only has one logo (centrino) and each of it’s LEDs are quite usefull, like WLAN Physically switched on/off.
I don’t quite see the usefullness of an LED in the manufactors logo or some strange pulsing light though.
Not all PCs are the same and my Desktop PC doesn’t even have one single Light or Windowkit.
Many Apple-Trolls like to pretend each PC would belong to a 16yr old Countersrike player and sounded like a starting Plane. But that’s just not true and there are also some PC Notebooks around that are quite beautifull and minimalistic.
I have an Inspiron 6000, which basically has the same design as the e1405, but it’s 15,4″ and somewhat dated by now.
When I got it, I was very critical of the media buttons on the front, but after living with it for a year, I wouldn’t want to buy a new computer without them. Contrary to what I initially thought, they’re incredibly handy both for controlling volume/WMP while working, and for controlling video playback while reclined in a comfy chair.
I’ll agree with you on the stickers though, but thankfully, they peel off wonderfully.
laptop, they should have included FreeDos or Linux, not win$$$ . I need it for linux development…
Well, it is no longer impossible to buy a Laptop with linux or nothing preinstalled. Complaining doesn’t help. Do “voteting by feet” and show Dell what you want by not buyig from then. It is as simple as that.
well you cant have a os without hardware, well you could but it would be kind of useless.
personally im looking for a new laptop.
and osx tied to the hardware maby im gonna run linux on mine if i get a macbook and sell the osx copy it’s legal here so why keep it.
How are you going to install firmware updates when they require OS X to pre-install?
There are several dell computers that I have problems with Linux on. I prefer computers from http://www.system76.com
just a little typo ;P
Anyone buying a new laptop now and wants to run Windows *surely* needs to know how well it’s going to run Vista (since that’s going to be the first major non-hardware upgrade you’ll do – unless you install Linux on it [totally ignored by the reviewer you note!] – next year). Very disappointing that the reviewer mentions the “Vista Capable” sticker, but then doesn’t bother to actually install Vista and see how it performs.
BTW, did anyone notice that in the summary he has a one-liner complaint about Dell partitioning the 100GB hard drive to 60GB, but nowhere else in the multi-page review does he actually mention that (e.g. what’s in the remaining 40GB – presumably a recovery partition? And did he get an OS recovery CD with the laptop?).
IMHO, *every* laptop or desktop review should try a live Linux CD (e.g. Ubuntu) and dedicate a paragraph to mentioning any issues there were with the hardware detection. It’s a 10-15 minute job that lazy-backsided reviewers just can’t be bothered with.
I don’t understand how the configurator works. The article claims that the laptop comes with a Intel Core Duo T2300, as configured. However, the T2300 is not even listed in the configurator for the Inspiron E1405 Dual Core. Also, if you do configure the e1405 with a 100GB hard drive and 1GB of memory, you would be closer to $1000.
I “assume” Dell temporarily ran out of T2300 processors, and is substituting with the T2050 for now.
