Miray Software has released [scroll down a bit] the first version of its newly developed embedded RTOS, Symobi. “Symobi was introduced in professional circles for the first time on the Systems 2006 exposition. Symobi is a graphical RTOS with a newly designed architecture, according to state-of-the-art technology. It is based on the microkernel system µnOS, which was also developed by Miray Software. Therefore, Symobi has its main characteristics – real-time, stability, portability, and modularity – and expands it with new services. The research team of Prof. Dr. Uwe Baumgarten of the Technical University Munich is also involved in the development.” There are screenshots, as well as a live CD (for x86 and the Pegasos II/ODW).

A more important issue to me is, does it have networking, can I have clusters?
Well I didn’t get much out of their LiveCD. Maybe my own intellectual limitations, or maybe an OS that’s not actually meant to be used.
Visually, it looked nice. The little demos worked well and showed the OSes potential for high-detail graphics.
However, I didn’t get any sound. I couldn’t close the little “mem” and “CPU” apps, and they annoyingly stayed on top of other apps. I couldn’t find any documents, instructions, or Help files. No file browser. No configuration tools. And at the end I couldn’t find a “Reboot” or “Shud Down” tool.
I don’t recall any of those problems with unOS. Was I missing a control panel or sub-menu somewhere?
The Demo is not a fully working copy of the OS, but more kind of a self-running demo(nstration).
To boot it on an ODW, it is – despite the readme on the CD – not necessary to change yout boot variables.
Simply put the CD into the drice, goto OpenFirmware prompt and type in:
boot CD kernel.fth
The ODW-Version doesn’t work with a G3-CPU. Also doesn’t like all versions of the FirmWare.

Symobi makes intensive use of IPC (inter process communication) operations. They do have little impact on real x86 processors, but are quite expensive in VMware, especially in the free VMware server. Therefore we recommend using VMware Player, if possible. Symobi runs faster on VMware Player or on VirtualPC.
The next version of Symobi will also contain a vastly improved IPC, accelerating Symobi on platforms like VMware where context switching is more expensive than on native x86 processors.

Yep, in a tiny 5″ x 3″ window with no sound. So maybe that’s not the best gaming example to use in their next LiveCD version…
It was not intended as a gaming “example” but merely as a tech demo for the fine grained multitasking Symobi offers. If you open several instances (2, 5, 10) of Doom, they will run smoothly in parallel. Of course Symobi cannot generate more processing power than the processor provides, but even if the processor is 100% working, the processing power is distributed equally to all running instances. This looks way different if you try it with other “modern” OSes.
BTW: The above refers to Symobi running on a native processor, not on a VM. Ought to be the same there, just slower…
Rebooting: This demo does not use any drives in your PC. So you can simply switch off the PC 😉
