E16 version 0.16.8.10 is now available for download. Changes: “Fix infinite loop when regenerating menus; fix potential incorrect termination of IPC connection which could cause segv.; eesh: fix bad event loop causing hangs in certain situations; fix xinerama head selection in certain situations; fix menu placement on xinerama screens; various minor bug fixes and enhancements.”

    How about a usable, decently non-buggy E17 release? It’s a nice enough desktop shell right now; why not just fix up the bugs and the compositor and release it instead of addimg more futuristic plans every time something new comes up, in spite of it being well behing Gnome, KDE, and XFCE with regard to eyecandy and such at this point?

    (Mind, it would also be nice to use the same damn graphical toolkit for all E17 apps, but that can wait.)

    …because not even the official site ( http://www.enlightenment.org/ )seems to mention it.

    I’m aiming this comment not on OSNews but at Enlightenment since their lack of updates has convinces me (rightly or wrongly) that it is a more or less dead project with no leadership or direction; thus, I don’t use it. Even if a project works for me now but it seems dead since I know it won’t grow with my needs. I really think they need to rethink the way they communicate with the broader community.

    @CaptainPinko – yea, much as I hate to say it, I’ve been thinking that E has been basically dead or dying for years now. How long has E17 been in development? It looks like 10 years now…. and while the technology sounds pretty cool (and has since it was first talked about), the Linux world has pretty much settled on a KDE/GNOME world, and E seems to be slipping farther and farther away ;) Take a look at the wayback machine… the first mention I see of E17 is in 1999: http://enlightenment.org/index.html“ rel=”nofollow”>http://web.archive.org/web/19991102232012/

    It is official; Netcraft confirms: Enlightenment is dying

    One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered Enlightenment community when IDC confirmed that Enlightenment market share has dropped yet again, now down to less than a fraction of 1 percent of all desktop environments/window managers. Coming on the heels of a recent Netcraft survey which plainly states that Enlightenment has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we’ve known all along. Enlightenment is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by failing dead last [samag.com] in the recent Sys Admin comprehensive windowing test.

    You don’t need to be a Kreskin [amdest.com] to predict Enlightenment’s future. The hand writing is on the wall: Enlightenment faces a bleak future. In fact there won’t be any future at all for Enlightenment because Enlightenment is dying. Things are looking very bad for Enlightenment. As many of us are already aware, Enlightenment continues to lose market share. Red ink flows like a river of blood.

    E17 is the most endangered of them all, having lost 93% of its core developers. The sudden and unpleasant departures of long time E17 developers Jordan Hubbard and Mike Smith only serve to underscore the point more clearly. There can no longer be any doubt: E17 is dying.

    Let’s keep to the facts and look at the numbers.

    E16 leader Rasterman states that there are 7000 users of E16. How many users of E17 are there? Let’s see. The number of E16 versus E17 posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 E17 users. EFL posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of E17 posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of EFL. A recent article put E17 at about 80 percent of the E* market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 E17 users. This is consistent with the number of E17 Usenet posts.

    Due to the troubles of Walnut Creek, abysmal sales and so on, E17 went out of business and was taken over by E17I who sell another troubled WM/DE. Now E17I is also dead, its corpse turned over to yet another charnel house.

    All major surveys show that Enlightenment has steadily declined in market share. Enlightenment is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If Enlightenment is to survive at all it will be among WM/DE dilettante dabblers. Enlightenment continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, Enlightenment is dead.

      -First, the redundancy in your post doesn´t make it more credible, IMHO.

      -Second, what are you talkin´ about?

      Firing up a Google search for E17I did not yield any result, so what is this supposed to mean?

      -Third, abysmal sales? How do you sell a free product? Where is Enlightenment sold? Or E17?

      While it is true that E17 development is incredibly slow (I was looking forward to its release back in 1999, when I was still using Linux), your post seems to me utterly strange, I´m sorry to say. -Back on the matter: Let´s just hope this still cool project doesn´t evaporate, it´s pretty hip still.

    Am I the only one who thinks that the version numbering system used by Enlightenment is at least weird?

    After 10 years of development all they can offer is v0.16.8.10???

    How long are we going to wait for v0.32.16.20? Another 10 years? I think my grandchildren will have a big chance of living in the same era as the final version of Enlightenment.

    Yes, I know each project sets its own version numbering system, and version 0.1 of project X might me more feature complete than version 0.1 of project Y. But it’s high time Enlightenment used something more easy to follow.

    I believe it will there will be a full release of E17 just as soon as Duke Nukem Forever comes out.

    In all seriousness, I like E17, but lets all admit it. It will never make a stable release.
