Yeah, most are just words that sound catchy but don’t seem to be fit for an OS name. Then again, take a generic word like Windows and everyone knows it.
You took the words right out of my mouth..er, hands. What the hell is “Jaffa”? or “Auros”? There were much better names out that were originally submitted. Much, much better.
..and I don’t mean my submissions (they were better, too, but then I might be biased). No, I mean there have been submissions that I wholeheartedly supported, like OBOE (OpenBeos Operating Environment), which is also a musical instrument – wery catchy for an OS like BeOS (well, I really do make music on BeOS).
On the other hand, I thought Jaffa was nice because I visited it recently, and quite liked it there :o)
Reality check people. It doesn’t matter what names would be there they would all suck if they were not part of the names you submitted.
We had 3000 submissions and had to trim down the list removing the dumb names (like “AAAAAA”) then removing any names that were trademarked/registered or where too similar to a trademarked/registered one.
I’m sorry, but I have to criticize the review committee that pared down the 3000+ names submitted.
Could they not have spent LESS time, and brought out an initial 100 names for us to pare down, from that we could trim it down more over the course of a week or so?
I mean.. 6 months to think up 15 names.
And why the number 15? Why not 32, or 10?
I entirely agree that at least 12 of the names on this “list” suck hardcore. Nova has bombed as a name for a product since it means NO GO in Spanish.. Anyone remember that disaster? GM learnt that lesson hard.
Also, why were we not notified sooner that it was taking so long, and at least given a status report as to how many names they had trimmed it down, on a week by week basis? At least we could have then said, “Whoa… Wait a moment.. let’s see what we are at now, at xx number.”
But no. In their infinite (pun intended) wisdom, they choose to unleash on us these pathetic 15 names.
Can we have a re-count please, mr. president? (Yes, I refer to Florida.)
I demand, on behalf of several hundred people who have spoken up around the web, the re-count, and re-evaluation of the naming process, not only for a new set of names, but a detailed outline of the voting process, and timeline for the new schedule.
I do not take my position lightly. I speak with real earnest, nobility, and of the opinion that in all seriousness, if we are EVER to be taken seriously by the rest of the world that we aim to make our target market, we should tread carefully before letting this debacle continue.
..the problem is that NOBODY can link them to BeOS. What’s good to have a name, if the community not only does not identify with it, but it is in danger of forgetting whatit was about?
Think of that project that aims at re-creating the Workbench/AmigaOS. What was their name? ‘Coz I sure as hello don’t remember their name -at all- ! I am sure those guys lost a considerable amount of exposure and visibility (and possibly even manpower) due to a name that meant squat for the average amigan.
If I’m wrong, correct me, criticize my views, let’s see.
I sadly have to agree totally with Chris here, I’m very disappointed by the list of names.
If these names were to be the “best 15” out of 3,000 – the Be community would be really a sad troup of loosers.
But I know that it ISN’T so, so the names were selected *VERY* unhappy.
(and I did not wait for my names to come up – I did not even spot it in the initial list, and I did not really like them, I was just brain-storming;)
There were much better proposals like “Plan B” (what legal problems would that name bring us? None) or why not really take the by now well known abbreviation “OBOS” ??
Please, we have deserved better than this. I don’t want to mourn around, I know it was a hard work, but the committee really failed on this one.
It is Not just some “name” for a new image-viewer or people-manager, NO, it is THE NAME we all want to identify with (to some degree), it will give the entire project a certain image and spin, there’s a lot of responsibility for and expectations to the committee at this point.
So please, try again, and all will benefit greatly from that.
The only name I could at the very least get comfortable with is “Infinity”, but there are already projects with that name, and there are 15 votes required, so I will not take part at this sad name-parody.
Please, relax, look at the names, see they suck, and then sit down and re-read the list (there are certainly trimmed-down lists with the most unusable names already removed, so you just have to re-read the last 100 names or so?)
People don’t seem to realize that naming any product is not an easy thing to do. Just like domain names, many names are already taken. The list of names represented in the 15 listed for voting were, like it or not, the best possible names. You can ask for a revote if you like, but it will only delay a process that should have been completed long ago.
The names on the list are each potentially great names. People are turning their noses up at these names simply because it means that they must break from the BeOS name. Don’t take it out on those that paired the list of names down. They worked with what they had to work with. Of the names listed, many have ties to BeOS and as such they floated to the top, names like Begin(great for a start button, could be seen as BEos aGaIN), Menlo (for Menlo Park, home of Edison and home of Be Inc.), Haiku(those wonderfully funny error messages that only BeOS has), among others. The sooner a name is chosen, the faster the Creative Design Team will be able to come up with logos that will help you visualize the name better. Just vote and lets see what happens.
That * is * an excellent name! I really wished it wasn’t ruled out, I would have made it my first choice! Simplicity, humor, and history all in one. Oh well.
There is the MorphOS company (http://www.morphos.de) that is called B-Plan. It is not the same as “Plan B”, but it is damned close, and the problem is that they are also doing OSes, so that might have been a legal issue too.
I didn’t know about their B-plan. But if Lindows got away with, LindowsOS (and you know WHOM they had against), then one would think some names that look similar but are still different, would be legal.
You know, you can have only so much permutations and combinations of 6-7 letters. One day, every freaking pronounceable word will be copyrighted. What a doomsday scenario ;o))))))))
Barely. Lindows got away because the word “windows” is too common. The “Plan B” is not that common, the judge could easily rule it out and allow only the B-Plan company to use it.
>Plan B -> Plan 9. Too similar.
Exactly too.
The Plan B can’t be used. Too many OS companies use similar name. And it is not just the legal issue, it is that it is not original when you got Plan 9 and B Plan on your back.
Of the choices, my favorite is Firefly. It suggests something fast and that illuminates. Just like the word “windows”, I don’t think there would be legal problems. There’s also SmartDisk’s Firefly Firewire external hard drives. But, “firefly” is a word for an insect and I don’t know how it could be trademarked just in itself. You might have to use “Firefly OS” or something like that, to distinguish it.
BTW, have you seen this screenshot of Plan 9? I don’t know what is their concept of usability, but to me it looks as if the interface was thought of in the toilet – which is, most of the time, an excellent place for creative ideas.
“Plan” is at least as common as windows. Humanity had plans just as long as they had windows. In fact, I guess there was this first guy who told his wife that he planned on creating something he would call “wondow” , so it won’t be so dark in their sleeping room (or cave).
Hey, I didn’t start this thread, so don’t mod ME off topic
Plan 9’s GUI is actually very elegant, from a system design point of view. In Plan 9, windows, just like everything else, are files in the filesystem. As for how it looks, I’ll agree it’s not terribly eye catching. But it has very few icons (I *hate* icons) so it can’t be all bad!
>Really, Eugenia, you don’t have a strong case here
I am not a laywer. But even if there is no legal issue there (I believe there is), it is just not original to have a such similar name with 2 other OSes/companies. From the marketing point of view, even.
so, why would your opinion on originality matter more than the one on the legal issues?
Just because thename hasn’t been included in the list doesn’t mean it wasn’t an oversight (may I use the word “mistake”?), and doesn’t make you automatically right.
Like osnews is a very original name? Not similar to benews, huh?
>so, why would your opinion on originality matter more than the one on the legal issues?
Mario, please refrain from attacking me or anyone else over here, just because we might not agree with you. I just did a comment here, as YOU did. I am not part of the OpenBeOS project, I do not force any decisions to anyone. **I am just discussing things.**
Your tone is very disturbing and you should apologize.
>Like osnews is a very original name? Not similar to benews, huh?
OSNews precedes BeNews. OSNews exists since 1997, BeNews was created in September of 1998.
but I didn’t intend to offend. I was just candid and rather merry, actually. We know each other since a long time (not as long as osnews was around, apparently ;o) so I supposed you’ll put the discussion in the right compartement.
Of course, the written online media is often a source of missunderstandings.
Although I know that many people disagree, I think that the list of choices is pretty good. I personally voted for Menlo, Haiku, Auros, Indigo, and Firebox (in mostly that order I think). People must understand that many good names have already been taken by other entities and that one of the main reasons this naming is occurring is to *reduce* legal entanglements. I thank the OpenBeOS team for all of their hard work compiling this list.
They rejected this story within less than a minute. Somebody better have already submitted it, or I’m going to consider them discriminatory towards *Be.
If I was at slashdot, I would also reject the story. It is not an appropriate story for Slashdot’s readers. It barely fits on OSNews too. People mostly want to report on finished stuff or new developments, not on trivial stuff like votings and namings…
Personally, I decided to post the story because:
1. We already received 7 submissions about it and it was cluttering our osnews back-end.
2. It was sure to create lots of discussion, which translates in more ad views. 😉
3. We made a news story back in the day asking people to suggest names, so I saw this story as a follow up.
If these three things weren’t true, the story wouldn’t have been posted here either.
hm…. That’s a catchy name, there, but I am not sure I like it – for the exact reason why it’s catchy. (on the other hand, some people said BeOS is so good for downloading and watching… you know what).
Mantis – i’d hate if OpenBeOS was called mantis. It has a huge negative connotation to it.
Terra – means earth in Latin. I dig latin names. After all, can you imagine Verdi’s Requiem in any other language? It just doesn’t shake as good. Yet, terra, it’s a bit too groundlevel, and the italian friends would perhaps be a bit embarrassed: “che sistema operativo stai usando? Si chiama “terra”. “Terra???? che roba e’?” Nah, not good.
Nova – now that’s a latin name that would fit an OS nicely. Problem is, it appears as the spanish friends would feel a bit queasy about it. Plus, I’m sure there are lots of software companies that regard that name as theirs. And have you seen the homepage of the Nova operating system? http://www.nongnu.org/nova/ And how about the OS used by the OS used in the Novation synths? http://www.novationmusic.com/nov_route/docs/front/front2.htm
A name isn’t something you’re going to like immediately. Think of “Microsoft” for instance … what it literally means is “small software”. When you say the word “Microsoft”, do you even relate it to “small software” anymore? No. A name changes meaning over time due to the experience you have with the company and its products. When I think of “Microsoft” nowadays, my mind sees an image of a company with bloated software and a bullying attitude towards competitors … I don’t remember what “Microsoft” really means.
Firefly would be my top choice. Imagine a logo with a black background with lightning bugs swirling around illuminating the word “Firefly”. I think it would work well. And we could make a modern BeBox and call it the “FireBox” =)
Marketing is a tough thing to do … I would consider it to be one of the most difficult parts of any project. It takes some effort to turn a list of 3000 names into 15; and even if the final list seems to suck, the only reason you think that is because you can’t associate any of the names with anything. Many Be users have a strong emotional association with a word consisting of just two letters … if we pick something halfway decent the product itself will do the rest.
I can’t even remember the names I submitted but I remember culling through lots of DNS searches to be sure the .org or .com domains were not already taken. Many of these 15 choices are already locked up which lessens my interest in using them.
A good name for an OS should be one or 2 syllables IMO. Alternatively it should have an abreviation that is short. It should sound pleasing when appended with OS as it will be used in press mentions etc.
Auros is a pretty good name but even that one has .org and .com taken. It sounds like “our OS” or “Eros” so it can be different things to different people.
I “would” have thought 15 names would have been a good sized list but after looking it over I think it should be opened up to 50 or so with the same “top 5” choice.
Nova is a great name (in English) but it has a tarnished history due to the automobile experience where it was a naming disaster.
Menlo is a clever name but it is locked up pretty well also.
I think Begin, infinity, terra, haiku have problems as names.
I fully recognize the difficulty of this task but I would suggest(only a suggestion) a “do over” with a few more choices offered.
“Be OS” was not a very good choice to start with and we still did pretty well with it but we should strive to do a little better IMO.
Tera was also the original name of the company currently known as Cray. When Tera bought the most of the remaining bits of Cray from SGI, they went with the better-known name.
Helium is a noble gas, it is very light and very stable. Plus the molecule of helium has a pretty simple structure which could easily be made into an icon. Imagine an animated Helium molecule on the start button. I think it might look pretty cool.
It just kills me how many people say “these names Suck” and then suggest B(whatever). Can you Guys/Gals even ~fathom~ how many times I have had to explain “BeOS”?
– no..not “beeeos”, “B – O – S” it is THREE syllables
– Be. not Bee, no bumble..just Be
– No, there is no “AOS” (ass)
– I’ve got no idea what ‘be’ Stands for.
– Be..Be…it is just freaking Be! OS means Operating System.
I still have a guy that calls me “the Boss guy” cuz he still ain’t got it straight.
As a name, “Be” sucks. ranks it right there with ‘C’ (D & F)I am soooo tired of anything with the letter ‘B’ in it.
Think outside of the letters.
You want a name that is short and evokes something. Don’t limit yourself to Computer products because for the most part computer names have been shitty. Really..how neat and original is windows?? you have to dress it up with ’98’XP’NT — it still makes it lame. Think of product names that conjure something more than the obvious. And overall, think of product names that haven’t been used before. You want to get rid of any “OS” crap – that is crap. “I’d like a Coke SP (for Soda Pop)” or how about…jeez I could go on. I looked at some of the names originally submitted and thought “I’d hate to be their kids”
BTW, Menlo was both the location for Be and for Thomas Edison’s Magic land of Innnovations.
…from someone who calls him/herself “I want a new name”? I don’t think so ;o)
As a name, “Be” sucks. ranks it right there with ‘C’ (D & F)I am soooo tired of anything with the letter ‘B’ in it.
Well, I think “C” had quite a success. As for your fatigue, just take it easy. One day you’ll see that B is an OK letter and there are quite a few nice words with B in them.
Isn’t it funny that the ID of this news-story is *1996*? IIRC that was the time the first PR of BeOS came out… what a coincidence.
As for the names – I still find it very hard to fill out the form without feeling depressed…
It seems these suggestions were not even Google’d, and so we have names that are MUCH more likely to cause trouble than others.
And they all do not represent the spirit of BeOS IMO – hey, why not call it THE BEAST ? (sorry for yet-another-suggestion, couldn’t resist)
Can be easily read as “The Best”, has “Be” in it, but legally, and it bites! (we also say that in German of things that have a certain kick).
oh well, I know it’s hard, but it’s harder if the choices are bad – feels like a political election… (which we’ll have on Nov. 26th…;)
brg and my respect for all involved, please don’t take the criticism personally, I have a huge respect for your efforts, but that doesn’t make it easier for me.
“firefly” is a word for an insect and I don’t know how it could be trademarked just in itself.
The term firefly is trademarked by alot of people for a lot of products. For everything from school books to wielding equipment. You can trademark almost any word.
After looking through the many (over 50) entries for firefly in the US Patent and Trademark Office website I didn’t find any that would directly interfere with copyrighting firefly for the name of a desktop os.
But its kinda tricky. You cutting it real close to some thing, escpecially if you get into embeded stuff. It would be possible to use the name firefly… but I would avoid it. A embeded version of firefly (something like BeIA) might bring about some lawsuits.
Since no one else mentioned it, kudos to the partial Borda Count (see http://bcn.boulder.co.us/government/approvalvote/altvote.html) style voting. The statisticians tell us that although it can be subject to manipulation, it is usually better at selecting the most acceptable candidate compared to plurality voting (one person, one vote).
They should have run a scripted nslookup and checked if these suggestions were available as .org, .net and .com. I checked some at random, and it doesn’t look good.
But I can’t say they are that bad, even though the ones I submitted was better.
Well, my first thought was ‘What, no fantastic amazing name which screams *me* *me* *me*‘. I think thats why people are so bitter, there was not one single great name. Once the initial disappointment wears down, you begin noticing that 1/2 the names are actually pretty good. Give it time and they will be just as great as some other names. Come to think of it, how many stupid names are there? IBM, HP, Compaq, SGI, KFC, Levis, BMW, Ford, GM, CNN, iD, Atari, BeOS etc. Face it, there are heaps of crappy names which have grown on us, so we dont think of them as crappy anymore.
Real good names (instantly catchy) are Amiga, Plan9, Honda, Ferarri, Pepsi etc. They are mysterious and simply roll off the tongue … melodic, like in an Opera (another great name BTW) or a sonete. I chose Nova, Nemo, Menlo, Indigo and Infinity.
…I hated the list btw, they sounded like names 15 year old kids name their HaxXor linux boxes or something, they really didn’t appeal to me.
I liked the “Begin” suggestion alittle though, containing a little tribute to “Be” in it and containing some meaning, but this is most likely not appealing to most kiddies out there that rather name it “fiR£b0X” or something, which I’m afraid it will end up being called…
Naming stuff is hard, so I urge the OpenBeOS people to think harder… I love/loved BeOS, would hate to see BeOS NexGen getting a silly name, even though it like everything else will grow on one and eventually get a meaning of it’s own.
“Hamlet”. I’m surprised it’s not on the list.
I voted firefly, though. I like sound of it. Plus, it was a good movie with Kevin Costner. 🙂
…Im sure a lot of work was put into this, but those proposed names suck.
that is the question for OpenBeOS/Hamlet.
OK, I’ll stop.
I couldn’t agree more!
These names SUCK big time!
C’mon PalmSource do something for the BeOS fans soon!
ciao

Nitpick here: I believe the movie was called ‘Dragon Fly’. Still, the movie itself was not bad… My wife and I rather enjoyed it.

A german article about it is on http://www.heise.de/newsticker/data/hps-24.10.02-000/
Some names are kind of sucky, but you have to give them credit for not going for the obvious or something awful that happens to have “Be” in it.
Personally I think Firefly is the best name. Although Infinity would also be cool (the catchfrase could be “to infinity … and beyond”
“…Im sure a lot of work was put into this, but those proposed names suck.”
Ditto that!!!!
..and I don’t mean my submissions (they were better, too, but then I might be biased). Actually, I think I submitted it as Plan-B, and then someone at OpenBeOS modified it to Plan B, but that’s irrelevant.
And, as I said, I embraced OBOE, which I didn’t submit, as a great choice.

Too similar.
I think it’s their database server with earth images.
Let’s think of these as “codenames” not real OS name.
Like “Whistler” or “Dano” .
>But if Lindows got away with

Yep, that’s how Plan 9 looks :
ROFL! I’d like to see Eugenia’s UI remarks about it 😉
“Plan” is at least as common as windows. Humanity had plans just as long as they had windows. In fact, I guess there was this first guy who told his wife that he planned on creating something he would call “wondow” , so it won’t be so dark in their sleeping room (or cave).
;o)))
>Plan” is at least as common as windows
Yes, but not when it is accompanied by the “B”.
>ROFL! I’d like to see Eugenia’s UI remarks about it 😉
It sucks. But Plan 9 is not a desktop OS. It just has a gui, just to say they have one… 😉
Tell that to Ed Wood, er, his estate (I don’t think he has any heirs because his wife left).
How about “AltPlanB”? This is two permutations removed from B-Plan.
But it has very few icons (I *hate* icons) so it can’t be all bad!
it was accompanied by “OS” as in LindowsOS. Really, Eugenia, you don’t have a strong case here.
The list of names represented in the 15 listed for voting were, like it or not, the best possible names.
Uhh no. Those were maybe the best names that the community came up with.
>Well, you’re not a merketing expert, either
I do know a thing or two about marketing though.
>so, why would your opinion on originality matter more than the one on the legal issues?
I chose fireBox. It sounds cool, to me anyway. FireFly next.
The name Terra. Am I mistaken or does terra mean ‘Earth’. If they choose that name, OBOS is not going to leave Terra Firma.
Actually thinking about it. Most name will sound terrible until you start using them and saying them for a while.
No problem.
I really like the name MANTIS to tell u the truth …
gives it the impression of power in a small package …
sounds kool too
🙂
Mantis in greek means “the one who can guess the future”.
it actually rocks in Heroes of Might and Magic IV
It’s a level 4 creature which has the special ability to tie the opponent during an attack, so it can’t retaliate or move.
By Eugenia
“Mantis in greek means “the one who can guess the future”.”
EVEN MORE REASON we should vote for MANTIS … it’s sooo fitting of the BeOS philosophy … “cutting edge”
I’m not too impressed with the list of 15. However, I guess I can live with one of these.
They rejected this story within less than a minute. Somebody better have already submitted it, or I’m going to consider them discriminatory towards *Be.
In my native language (portuguese), translated to english:
Nova – in english, this word will be “New”. Remember you, OpenBeOS have a NewOS kernel. BTW, it’s a good name….
Perhaps that Nova==New. Then NovaOS.
Aros – circles. Doo!
BeOS users WANT a name that remember “Be”. Then, Mr. Phipps can bring BeOS name from Palm still.
But see: If the name chosen is Nova, for example, how will be called the BeAPIs? NButton? NMenu? NRadioButton? NFrame? NRect? NPicture?

like
“qlimax”
“Titanium”
“Chronos”
“G-Project”
“Mach”
“NRG”
than “Blue Eyed OS”. That has got to be the silliest name for an OS ever. For the record, I’m brown eyed
-fooks
You are correct, terra means Earth (in catalonian language).
Also, terra is an ISP company belonging to Telefonica of Spain (the first telecom company in spain).
You can visit his multiple domains at
http://www.telefonica.com
http://www.terra.com,
http://www.terra.es, (spain)
http://www.terra.com.ar (argentina)
http://www.terra.cl (colombia)
http://www.terra.com.co (colombia)
http://www.terra.com.br (brazil)
etc….
Also is the company who bought Lycos Portal…..
Not Seems to be a good name….. i think…..
In portuguese:
Terra==Earth
Amiga==Friend
Ps: My eyes is brown too

I could settle for Mantis although I wish we had better alternatives.
‘the One’ would be a cool name. I got the One OS on my machine.
Plus who couldn’t refer to ‘The One OS to rule them all…’
How about a late contribution?
I always assumed Microsoft was software for micro-computers (does anyone use that term anymore?).
“Be OS” was not a very good choice to start with and we still did pretty well with it but we should strive to do a little better IMO.
is the bomb.
Mantis is a php/MySQL/web based bugtracking system
see http://mantisbt.sourceforge.net/
and
Mantis is the name of a company that produces garden tools. They make a very nice garden tiller that is actually called “Mantis”
see http://www.mantisgardentools.com/
Tera was also the original name of the company currently known as Cray. When Tera bought the most of the remaining bits of Cray from SGI, they went with the better-known name.
Yours truly,
Jeffrey Boulier
How about HeliumOS?
Helium is a noble gas, it is very light and very stable. Plus the molecule of helium has a pretty simple structure which could easily be made into an icon. Imagine an animated Helium molecule on the start button. I think it might look pretty cool.
Just a suggestion.
Can the new name be simply “be”?
Oh yeah, and in case HeliumOS will turn out to be vaporware, well who can blame it? 🙂
Zeta is a good name, go check it out http://www.yellowtab.com
ZETA
> “qlimax”? “G-Project”? That sounds like Pr0n!
On the whole, I like the list.
Just a note:
Terra.cl is “Telefonica” in Chile, not Colombia!!
I think that “Begin” is a good name to start ;-), but I preffer “Begrin” or “Be:-D”.
Nova sound like a car or a serie from discovery channel.
Alejandro.
Hi.
Who likes that one?
Joel
And what about this:
BTW
(“By the way”…or “BE the way”! :-D)
Alejandro.
Hugh
it has Be and the cool factor in it. It could be a winner :o)
Now we just need Eugenia to tell us why it isn’t good ;o))))
but “BeefOS” is better. References Be, hexdump signatures, where’s the beef, and you can’t say it w/o smiling.
Admiral: HeliumOS sounds like Helios, which is taken.
These names are very, ummm, boring. I remember one person (named Chris) who had given a good o.s. name in the suggestion box. It’s was: Light.
Also another problem: no domains available with these choices. Unless you want a .TV prefix added to the domain name, other o.s. names are needed.
> Think of that project that aims at re-creating the
> Workbench/AmigaOS. What was their name? ‘Coz I sure as hello
> don’t remember their name -at all- ! I am sure those guys
> lost a considerable amount of exposure and visibility (and
> possibly even manpower) due to a name that meant squat for
> the average amigan.
AROS, the name is AROS, and it stands for Amiga Research OS, and pretty much everyone in the amiga community knows about it.
Feel free to suggest another name “more related to AmigaOS”, let’s see what does come out…
“firefly” is a word for an insect and I don’t know how it could be trademarked just in itself.
IsOS
Easy! AmigOS
I think Forge is pretty good, as is Haiku. I voted Jaffa, because it makes as much sense as other OS names, so it fits right in:
Amiga, BeOS, QNX, Linux, Jaffa, Plan9,
You get the idea.
> What the hell is “Jaffa”? or “Auros”?
Hmmm. Well… where I come from, “Jaffa” means an impotent (as in intercourse) man.
I really wish I had submitted some suggestions 6 months ago… Then I could complain about this less than aweinspiring short-list.
As far as I can see, none of those names are available as .org domains. I would have thought that that should be a fairly important consideration. No?
IMHOS
(perhaps IMNSHOS would be more appropos of this thread…)
I hope it isn’t mantis, I keep thinking of the preying mantis sex act. Afterwards mummy eats daddy, every last bit of him!
I saw it in nova or discovery, its gross!
<braindead>
The lame names we’ve been given to choose from makes my even lamer suggestion doesn’t seem too bad.
AsBestOS | asBEstos | as-be-stos
A superior basic environment streamlined to operate supermachines
</braindead>
Seriously
My ratings out of 10
Auros – (3) reminds me of aurous
Begin – (4) gin drinking be enthusiasts?
Dysis – (4) die soon sis (message from beos)
Firebox – (6) firebox.com would bite if bebox
Firefly – (6) ok
Forge – (5) boring
Indigo – (3) too girly Indigo girls?
Infinity – (4) lacks foresight lol
Haiku – (5) missing haikus from netpositive?
Jaffa – (4) sounds like something bad I ate
Mantis – (3) with a name like that we’ll be preyed on by..
Menlo – (6) try lemon or melon
Nemo – (2) 2yr old trying to say nero?
Nova – (3) gee the stationary OS
Terra – (4) terra lycos?
Let’s see. If none of the above work out may I suggest the following
Windows – (6) Doors might be better
Apple – (5) Don’t like mango? Orange? Grape?
Linux – (5) Linux is not unix, its a windows wannabe
QNX – (4) Quantum unix sounded cool anyway
Atheos – (7) Very symbolic
MacOS – (4) Mouthful
Dos – (7) no comment
Unix – (7) no comment
BeOS – (8) Be yours? certainly.
I would just like to say the list of choices given to the BeOS community is very very …..
Well I can’t complain couldn’t careless if they called it SteveOS as long as it works like a charm.
Indigo is a well-known bookstore in the heart of downtown Montreal (CANADA), plus Indigo Café Restaurant. Check out http://www.indigo.ca Maybe their lawyers will be watching. As for the naming game, I would have preferred the name of a musical instrument and I whole heartedly agree with a previous poster on the name OBOE.
Sylvie
Thanks Kevin, I didn’t realize that (about words being trademarked).
Sounds like a bug to me….
I (later) suggested
TIARA (.com for sale, .net probably obtainable too)
and
ZETOS (all domains available, greek mythology figure)
But no luck with the powers that be.
Helmar
>ZETOS (all domains available, greek mythology figure)
I never heard of him. Are you sure it is Greek? (I was the best student in my class regarding mythology.
“Zeto” in greek means “hurrah”.
Zita (or Zeta) is how we call the Z letter in our alphabet.
They should have run a scripted nslookup and checked if these suggestions were available as .org, .net and .com. I checked some at random, and it doesn’t look good.
But I can’t say they are that bad, even though the ones I submitted was better.
list is just non-tasty as politcorrect movies in transcontinental flights – and reason seems be same.
But some names from list sounds not os bad if jut to attach OS as part of name (sure, aros is unsuitable for such tricks, as it already has it inside)
Why not just use OBOS? sounded bether then any of those.
Aka “Want To Be” and “Look-Alike”.
Both wanabee.org and wanabee.net seems to be available…
