In a blog post on the Windows 7 Team blog, it was announced that the 2.5 million unit limit of the Windows 7 Beta will be lifted for two weeks. Whether or not the limit is reached, those wishing to get the beta will be able to do so until January 24th.
Are the keys really necessary? I downloaded the leaked .ISO from a torrent, And when I was intalling I skipped the key input just pressing next, everything installed just fine.
it probably would run in nagware mode with the pop-ups about the operating system not being legitimate until when the beta expires.
From what I’ve read so far it appears to be that they are only giving out a certain number of keys as multiple people have reported on different forums, etc. that they are being given the same keys as ones that have been leaked out.

It’ll run for 30 days without a key after which one is required to keep going until August.
This proves, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that the download cap was nothing but a marketing move. All those who are surprised, please raise your hands now.
I raise my hand!
A -working- marketing move from microsoft, this must be accidental!!! They really come a long way since few month. Their image get better and better, it is now possible to belive that user will actually forget/forgive vista like mac user did when bootcamp or the app store came out.
Anyway, fueling that hate was fun (for Linux user), it prove how much critism influence perception.
