I can develop for the Palm Pre or Google Android on Windows, Linux, and Mac. I wish it was the same for the iPhone.
But then Apple would loose a sale for every developer that wants to target the iPhone.
That’s the kind of thinking that hurts a lot of companies these days. I want to target the iPhone. I cannot afford a Mac (they are about 2-3 times what I can afford). Thus, they are losing my application that I would develop for the iPhone. That is the real loss. I am not a target for the MacOS. I am a target as a developer. With Java, I can develop for all 3 platforms for the OS. In addition, I can develop for Android and WebOS on my Mac, Linux or Windows box.
But I can’t develop for the iPhone unless I go out and get an fairly recent Intel Mac. Oh well!

Not sure if you still can make a living out of developing iPhone applications, it is a hit and miss thing… Well you probably can but it takes a lot of effort 🙂
One thing which I found amazing was that Apple was able to trigger a goldrush mentality around its app store, and as in a real gold rush only a few hit the jackpot the others only invest time (and personal money) and as usual only the middle man buying the gold and selling the shovels gets real rich (Apple in that case)
