Microsoft Confirms Courier Project by Cancelling it

Now this sucks. We’ve encountered several ‘leaks’over the past few months regarding a ‘secret’ project within Microsoft called Courier. The demonstrations showed a highly innovative dual-touchscreen tablet thingamabob that combined multitouch and pen input to create a completely new user interface. Today, Microsoft confirmed the project’s existence (yay!)… By cancelling it (boo!).

While Gizmodo’s initial report used the omnipresent “people familiar with the matter” as its source, they have also confirmed the report with Microsoft itself. On Wednesday, Microsoft executives informed the Courier team that the project would no longer be supported. While it remains unclear if Microsoft ever had serious plans to bring the device to market, we now at least know it won’t come to market.

Microsoft Corporate VP of Communications Frank Shaw confirmed the report to Gizmodo. “At any given time, we’re looking at new ideas, investigating, testing, incubating them,” he told the gadget blog, “It’s in our DNA to develop new form factors and natural user interfaces to foster productivity and creativity. The Courier project is an example of this type of effort. It will be evaluated for use in future offerings, but we have no plans to build such a device at this time.”

I could waste a lot of words on this, but a picture is worth a thousand words.

I’ll toast to a great project that will never be coming Saturday night. Oh and Gizmodo, you could’ve at the very least bought a Courier prototype.
