OS2World.com reports that IBM has released their OS/2 strategy for 2003. They appear to be pushing the WebSphere Software Platform as well as client and server upgrades to Warp 4. The report can be viewed at IBM’s website.

They could/would open source OS/2… but that’s just a dream *sigh*
Stardock Systems nearly aquired OS/2 from IBM a few years ago, and they intended to revive OS/2 and release a brand new version. But IBM backed out of the deal at the last minute saying “We believe it is not in our customer’s best interest to have a new version of OS/2.”
I don’t think IBM has a clue what is in their customer’s best interest.
is what OS/2 Warp 4.5 would have been… look at http://www.ecomstation.com. I am tempted to buy it, but it is a little pricey.
ecomstation might look at bit pricey if you just are looking for the OS without thinking about that you actually get a huge load of extra software along. One of the best add-ons you get along is Lotus SmartSuite and that itself cost a bit.

I still am not quite sure what exactly eComStation is. Is it actually OS/2 version 4?
I agree with Simba: I don’t think [insert computer industry company here] has a clue what is in their customers’ best interests.
Is that thing still alive? Sheesh. Wonder if they got it to install on SCSI yet without locking up.
I only ever bought three commercial OS packages (which is not to say I haven’t used many others):
OS/2 v3
OS/2 Warp 4
BeOS 4.5.2
Once you’ve found perfection there’s no going back.
The first release of eCS was based on the updated code from IBM called either MCP or ACP (Merlin (client) resp. Aurora (server) Convenience Package). When speaking of version number it would be v4.52 of OS/2 from IBM. The codebase to make it really easy used is based on IBM OS2 Warp Server for e-Business (WSFeB). So for example among other one of the nice features that the client code got from this package was the JFS FS among other.

I’ve been using Warp 4 with an Adaptec 2940U since 1996, and with a 2940UW on the other OS/2 box since 1997.
