Xiaomi just unveiled their copy of the next iPhone, and it looks pretty great.
Nothing says sci-fi like a bezel-less screen, and Xiaomi’s newly announced Mi Mix Android phablet is very sci-fi with its 91.3 percent screen-to-body ratio. This 6.4-inch device has just been announced as a concept phone by the Chinese company, but weirdly enough, it has a price, Â¥3,499 ($516), and a release date of November 4th in its home country.
Think of every out-there spec you could cram into a phone and the Xiaomi Mi Mix probably has it. The rear of this handset and its side buttons are both made out of ceramic. The display is curved at the corners – just like that Sharp prototype we recently saw – and all the top-mounted sensors have been removed. The proximity sensor has been replaced by ultrasound, the earpiece has been replaced with a piezoelectric speaker that uses the metal frame to generate sound, and the front-facing camera is relocated to the bottom (though the phone can thankfully be rotated upside down for more flattering selfies).
It’s quite likely the next iPhone will do away with the top and bottom bezel entirely in favour of a display much like this one. There’s also been some talk about a ceramic iPhone, also just like this Xiaomi phone. It’s pretty blatantly shameless that Xiaomi is ripping off the next iPhone, and I hope Obama (or Clinton, the next president) bans Xiaomi from shipping this shameless ripoff of the next iPhone from sales in the US to protect Apple’s courageous innovation from these foul Asian companies.
The shamelessness is just unbelievable here. I can’t believe we live in a world that allows Asian companies to copy future Apple products. It makes me sick.
Burrrrrn!
I need one of this with a quantum radar on it as one of its sensors.

Who says you can’t detect sarcasm on the internet?
I do.
My browser automatically sends the entry to a my Sarcarsm Parser Reloaded but it just segfault.
How am I supposed to detect sarcarm now? Am I forced to use my brain again?
Waiting for the next iCrap to include that function so I don’t have to think again (we all know Apple can think for us and tell us what do we want). Just waiting for them to implement the “open_wallet(int *credit_card_info)” function to be implemented by default with no user requiered.
Let’s say, *at last* they are not just copying last year iPhones.
Made me lol,
Hit the nail on the head, this is what apple should have released ages ago. Theyre playing far to safe which was one of the reasons Microsoft has fallen lately.
That phone looks gorgeous
I still think theres also a market for a phone based on eink, i.e. add phone unit to a kindle. As not everyone is obsessed with video and photos and for the people that need a very long lasting phone but with a crisp sharp screen the eink phone would be a hit (im excluding the russian one as it was LCD one side and eink the other, so the ui and target was a bit mixed).
I have an e-ink phone at home. The Motorola F3. Had it for ages, and is a great device for actually using as a phone. Incredible battery life. Does one thing and does it well. It’s been in a box for a few years now.
Check out the Motorola F3 e-ink phone. It’s not a smart phone, just a basic phone. It’s great, nice contrast big numbers on display great for older ones. Friend got one for an older family member. Had to buy it in Mexico or something because it wasn’t available or easily found in the US. This was 5 years ago give or take a year. Best part about the e-ink display, the battery lasted a long time.
Thanks, i didn’t realise there was an actual e-ink phone, im looking into it now
I don’t think a phone can be gorgeous. Especially another slab. That is roughly the same design since 2007 now.
You’ll have to buy a new one in a year, because they won’t be sending any security updates.
I have a Xiaomi Mi5, you get weekly updates on the dev ROM and monthly on the Stable ROM.
If you look at the MI2 from 2012 is still getting the weekly updates.
http://en.miui.com/download-2.html
At least look at what support they offer before spouting a generalization…
My Mi3 just got a new system update yesterday (MIUI 8.0.3).
I really don’t get it: do we hear people complaining or even shouting “RIP OFF!” each time a car looks very similar to the next? Or a TV? Or a fridge? A washing machine, maybe?
So, why should phones be treated any different and why should any company have the exclusive to a specific look & feel? Do we really want to see a star shaped phone? 😉
RT.
Yes they do, the latest rage is about Octavia Facelift 2016 being a rip off of Mercedes E Class 2009.
That’s insane, The verge pretty much said that…
«Did Xiaomi just preempt the iPhone 8?»
http://www.theverge.com/2016/10/25/13401600/xiaomi-mi-mix-iphone-8-…
Even with the Iphone 8 being unreleased, unleaked and simply non existant , they almost get accused of being Apple copycats ^^
Ok Thom, you made your point about American protectionism. To place that into perspective: in the ‘8O’s of the previous century people adopted a similar attitude towards the Japanese which was initially well founded because they did copy a lot of stuff. Until they started innovating. Which some Chinese companies have been doing but far from all.
And in all fairness, the huge legal battle between Samsung and Apple has demonstrated that even the US judicial systems with its juries can still come to a fairly reasonable outcome. Most of Apple’s claims were thrown out or invalidated. Note that it was Dutch judges who first granted a EU wide ban on certain Samsung phones on the basis of a design patent.
I bet Apple spent more on lawyers than what it recovered through the court system. And the fat lady has not sung yet as I believe that the US Supreme Court has agreed to review at least one of the cases related to design patent infringement. Considering that during this acrimonious litigation Apple was still buying billions of USD worth of chips from Samsung, you need to put all of this in perspective.
It’s a fine line – flat out copying with no differentiation is not good.
But at the same time, it’s bad to prevent common sense designs being widely adopted. Are phones supposed to have sharp, pointed corners that cause injury, just because one manufacturer patented a rounded corner?
Being able to make that distinction can be tricky.
I remember when Nintendo created GameWatches from ground up and sold millions of copies.
I remember when Nintendo created Mario and Kong games for the Atari 2600.
I remember when Nintendo created the NES and proposed it to Atari that refused.
I remember when Nintendo sold its NES and sent Atari to oblivion.
But Japaneses are copycat people. Sure. And black people are lazy Negroids ? Stereotypes last for so long.
Under the skin, flesh and blood have the same color, people from all around the world have brains and use it the same way. Aren’t Asians good in math ?
Oh, look, another stereotype so conveniently forgotten in that case.
You complain about stereotypes and then you bring up that ridiculousness? I know Asians who are good in math. I know Asians who are not good in math… just like I know Americans, British, Germans… who both are and aren’t good in math. It is those of you who insist on dwelling on what these stereotypes are that prolong them the most and do the most harm.
Whoosh!
I also know people who can barely take a joke. They come from various race and ethnic groups.

I know this is a small thing in the grand scheme of things, but you should use a zero and not an uppercase o for ’80s.
… it has a headphone jack.
End of discussion here.
OK, you’re no copycats anymore. So please, please, don’t sandbag this device with that badly written POS.
The sneering, negative tone of this site is grating. I bet Thom is great fun at parties. Why not just praise the phone if you think it should be praised? It’s “journalism” like this that gives bloggers a bad name.
That’s weird, because I had great fun writing it. I’m still smiling.
Yep, that’s my point.
It really wasn’t. You said “negative tone”, while I said “great fun”.
So, unless you miswrote terribly, that wasn’t your point at all.
Why do you think the tone of an article is related to the mood of its writer?
My original message said that the article was negative, and that you wouldn’t be fun at parties. You responded by saying you had great fun writing the article. That doesn’t affect the first point in any way, but it proves the second point. Clearly, anyone who finds joy in negativity would be negative and therefore no fun at parties, so “yep, that’s my point” is an entirely accurate statement in response to your comment.
It’s bizarre that I’m having to explain this.

You missed the sarcasm which was hilarious. It wasn’t negative, it’s just that sarcasm is difficult to see when there is so much out there that sounds the same but is real. I read an article from a comedian who complained that Trump was ruining comedians, because he said such outrageous things that it was hard to lampoon.
Exactly, how does that joke go?
“And now I’m going to tell a bunch of political jokes.”
*silently holds up a picture of Trump*
If you couldn’t detect the overt sarcasm that was pouring from that writeup, how in the world do you function on a daily basis?
Take a chill pill and stop being so angry and negative, and you might actually be able to enjoy life instead of seeking something to complain about like a junkie looking for his next high.
I got the sarcasm. That’s what my comment was about. Why resort to sarcasm rather than judge the device on its own merits? Really, that should have been obvious to you. Perhaps English isn’t your first language and you can’t detect and understand nuance.
Please, the scribblings of a drunken teenager on the bathroom wall of a seedy nightclub have more nuance than anything you’ve written in this thread. You were dead serious in your critique of Thom’s blurb, and you didn’t acknowledge that it was sarcasm until you were called out for missing it. I do believe you are the one in need of a primary level English refresher. Good day 🙂
I’m not even sure what to say. It’s difficult to know how to talk to someone so dim that they’d think any human would be unable to detect the sarcasm in the original post. And what’s worse is that you’ve attempted to take a snooty tone, with an I’m-so-shrewd attitude, and use those to “correct” someone, but I’m just embarrassed for you. You’re aiming for “shrewd”, but you’ve landed on “moronic”.
Hamlet, Act III, Scene II, my Queen. 🙂
Last time I heard this I was in primary school and it was in response to my denying being gay. You’ve found your level – nice work.
If that’s an iPhone, then where do i plug in all my Lightning-headphones?
I hate to be the guy that drops either of these types of phone/phablets.
That’s the only problem with great Xiaomi phones…
Mmmm China, the country that doesn’t innovate, the country that doesn’t have 5 CPU architectures they manufacture including one with an entirely indigenous design. Yup, those Chinese never innovate, they’ll never build a CPU called Sunway based on Alpha which could beat the pants off any Intel CPU no sir. Those Chinese are so stuck in the past…. They’ll never rival the American tech industry on cost or features, no sir.
All those “innovations” were not chinese. They just bought (steal) it and “improved”.
Bought is almost the exact opposite of steal.
Looks nice, kind of reminds me of the Sharp Aquos Crystal line (btw, who’s naming these… xiaomi mi mix, seriously, while also having a xiaomi mi max?).
Edit: it’s a bit weird that some mention this phone in relation to the iPhone, since for a very long time now the iPhone’s screen2body has been nothing to really brag about.
Edited 2016-10-26 06:15 UTC
For some obscure reason it seems people buy a lot more Apple smartphones than Xiaomi’s
As Xiaomi’s have so much innovation and features over the rival probably all these guys are just plain stupid
Wake me up when I can order them directly from Amazon with full european warranty.
To be honest. I wouldn’t like a phone which has no borders where you can’t place your fingers to hold the phone. It gives much more error touches. Even my old G2 had that problem, with me as a user.
My nexus 5x (you know, that phone from google which was dirt cheap), has bezels and touch errors are far less.
Also the need of having a very thin phone is strange. It breaks quicker en does not hold comfortable in my hands.
(Another funny thing are the enormous cages that are being bought to prevent phones from breaking)
But I do understand that my annoyance is not based on aesthetics which is far more important than usefulness.
I agree, for what it’s worth. I also despise the way Samsung’s Edge models where the image gets distorted at the edges of the display.
Reviewers and bloggers only care about how cool things look unfortunately.
OMG. Its a huge rectangle with rounded corners and its even more fragile than any phone before it.
It actually looks kinda nice, what with the round edges. If only I could have that with 4″ screen and design&materials that can survive in every day use without a case or screen protector.
Sorry to say, but if you cannot take a better care of your $600 device, I cannot help you, and no one would ever.

Hey Tom.
I’ve been an almost daily visitor of this site for about 10 years, but for more than a year now I’ve been feeling you should just really start a blog (where you can vent as you please).
As far as I am aware, this is not “thOmSnews”, and I am getting tired of you crossing the line with your freaking personal opinions like you are the god of reason.
Go fcuk yourself.
PS: No hard feelings, I’d love to buy you a beer sometime I’m in Europe, but you need to get a grip ffs.
Edited 2016-10-27 07:46 UTC
Just like Miley Cyrus would tell you : if you’re not happy, just go f*ck yourself somewhere else.

Seriously. Even if the iPhone 8 was going to be LITERALLY identical, they beat them by an entire year. In technology terms, this is a lifetime. The phone looks incredible. And you bash it for having a perceived similarity to something that’s not even out yet, and has software that is at least 2 solid years behind the chief competitor (iOS < Android. Full stop).
Then the weird political rant about Trump without recognizing that Shitlery is an ACTUAL criminal with ACTUAL numerous crimes and evidence against her?
This site has never been great. Now it’s just shit.
Trump fanatic thinks article is serious.
This Phone and the ultra sonic … and all the the great featues are in the making for the last 2 years. so even bevor the iphone 7 this phone was in the making.
