eh? excuse me but they are ten times more “gnome” applications than KDE ones. They run under GTK IIRC.
the theme was kinda like an OS X rip-off. but i like it. i’ll wait for this version to find itself in the iso’s before i upgrade.
To all that say that I criticized KDE: please point to me where I did that. Considering that I respect KDE as a nice opensource desktop, I find that hard to believe.
You see, it’s easy to say what you like about your preferred desktop and why. That’s what this article is about.
So if people are gonna criticize ANY desktop, please give some facts so developers can understand what’s wrong and what’s not in order to improve it.
Saying “this DE sucks” doesn’t help, and just shows you have some bias against that desktop, not that it’s a logical bias.
Despite that I enjoy Dekkard’s gift of the gab and his style of arguing rendering other-camp-zealots helpless I must incline to the oposite site.
Thanks, but the only thing I did was asking for facts. I’m not specially gifted or anything. And I think the problem is not on my end
all have affiliation with the official GNOME desktop. GAIM/GIMP/OOo/Moz are all associated wayyyy more with GNOME than KDE. KDE is konq/KPaint or whatever/Kopete/Koffice.
Open Office is a sort of middle ground i admit.
eh? excuse me but they are ten times more “gnome” applications than KDE ones. They run under GTK IIRC.
Only Gaim uses gtk2, the Gimp uses an older version, gtk1. The other programs defenately don’t run GTK.

People generally have a reason for saying something. Obviously there’s going to be a reason they believe whatever DE they believe sucks sucks (fun sentence
). And not everyone’s been trained to work out why they think a particular piece of software is bad (this skill will come with time as more people are born using computers). Saying something sucks can be helpful. Though I imagine an OSNews forum isn’t going to be the right context
But nevertheless, saying KDE sucks* isn’t necessarily a bad thing, so long as you can say it without coming off as a zealot and you can’t say why and it’s the kind of context where someone who can make a difference exists to help work out why you think that KDE sucks so that, if your opinion might be representative of the population to which KDE has been aimed, KDE can be refined.
* I’m not a part of KDE’s desired userbase. I don’t normally say that KDE sucks with no reason, but if I get into a post like this, I might say it just because it’s simpler. Oh, and Gnome doesn’t rock, either. It’s merely better.
“Take Mozilla, Open Office, Gimp, Gaim or anyhing you want”
“Only Gaim uses gtk2, the Gimp uses an older version, gtk1. The other programs defenately don’t run GTK.”
GAIM uses GTK2, Gimp 1.2 uses GTK1 and Gimp 1.3 (soon to be 1.4) uses GTK2. Mozilla uses either GTK or GTK2 (depending on your choice). People, get your facts straight.
Eh? Gimp not Gnome???? That’s funny! GTK+ was derived from Gimp widgetset, what are you talking about. And version does not matter. Gimp 1.3.7 uses GTK+ 2 for your information.

I am not sure about the stable release but the development release of Gimp uses GTK2.
OO is definitely not a Gnome app, but is a better office suite than the Gnome equvalents IMHO. I like Gnumeric, and GNUCash, but otherwise prefer OO.
To all those criticizing the Gnome design principle. I thought the whole point of the rewrite in Gnome2/GTK+-2.X, was to clean up the messy design of Gnome 1.x. Is it still bad? I have done some work with GTKMM and I thought it was reasonably well designed. I grant you I was not exactly stretching the limits in UI design but it worked well for me. Also if you are going to criticize or quote the opinions of others you really should provide a link to back up your statements.
Ah, that’s why mozilla is so slow. Event on a multi-ghz machine mozilla crawls on linux. Otoh on windows mozilla is much faster.
Just so you know Gimp 1.3 will become Gimp 2.0
RC’s will be out soon…
This rarely happens when a post is about a KDE/Gnome release, strange…
Where is Eug btw? Posts 1% as abusive as some in here would have been moderated in a second so I’m guessing she’s away or just have decided to leave this post to self destruct or something.
I like gnome btw.
You guys ruined this topic. This wasn’t a topic about KDE. What a bunch of stupid teenagers you are.
Victor.
“Eh? Gimp not Gnome???? That’s funny! GTK+ was derived from Gimp widgetset, what are you talking about. And version does not matter. Gimp 1.3.7 uses GTK+ 2 for your information.”
It is as I wrote it. GIMP IS NOT A GNOME APP. GNOME is based upon GTK+ as their toolkit but the gimp has nothing in common with GNOME, it doesn’t use any of GNOME’s libraries. And yes I’m talking this because I know about it. And for your information, please go and inform yourself.
Practically every KDE topic is ruined by GNOME-related posts, and vice versa. Get over it. Welcome to the desktop war of the 21th century. YEEEEEEEEEEEHAWWWWWWWW.
(I for one perfer WinXP)
These are really cool icons. Where can I get them?
Windows sucks too.
Everything sucks … blahblahblah. Those who mean to post “Gnome sucks” should use their kde or else and be happy. I’m using gnome and happy too. Where’s the problem? I don’t think gnome sucks and neither i think kde sucks, because i don’t use it. That’s so poor guys. When you think gnome sucks, then don’t say the Gtk+ File selector sucks, because it’s not a thing the gnome developers wrote. But i always see this as the only argument from you against Gnome. Gnome is more than this file selector. And Gnome doesn’t want to be the same as KDE, so don’t compare it with KDE, right? Bah, damn trolls …
The problem is that it is really a religious war for these people. They feel they must slander the competition in order to prove that their choice is better. God knows they have invested man-weeks to install it and get it running halfway decently. So obviously they would be hesitant to try and switch, and as such, violently defend their choie. See also “M$”, http://bsd.slashdot.org, etc.
About the icons (I guess you mean the ones with penguins all over)

About that file selector, it lacks:
– a file type filter (*.txt, *.xml, *.c, etc)
– icons to accompany the files in the file lists
– a “create new dir” button
– a “show hidden files” toggle button
It’s unclear what buttons 5,6 and 8 (from the left) do – and do all buttons have tooltips? (that’s a must as well)
-A.
…is not a GNOME issue per se, but rather a GTK one. A new fileselector is in the works for GTK2.4. I think it is actually preferable to not have a selector for GNOME because in the end it will impose 2 file selectors on the people, the GNOME one and GTK one. That would be inconsistent. The fileselector is coming. Its going to be the best too
As this flamewar …. ummmm …. discussion has degenerated to the level of trolldom, perhaps a few words of civility and a few words about the alternatives would be in order.
As has been expoused here <ad.naseum>, whatever turns your crank! Jeez…. it’s a f*cking WM/GUI Environment! Rejoice in the fact that we _have_ a choice as a community – differences be damned. Think about the rants….. “I don’t like the file_selector.”…. rants like this are Moronsoft troll-fodder to create dissention in online communities such as this. Moronsoft is all about _ONE_ homogenous(sp?) environment. It is definately in Moronsoft’s best interest to create as much chaos in the community as is possible. They are desperate and they are using every single “Halloween” trick as they can.
This is what it is _ALL_ about …. your individual CHOICE!!! Freedom of CHOICE. If KDE turns your crank – go for it. It’s a tremendous environment. If GNOME turns your crank – go for it. It’s a tremendous environment. They _BOTH_ have their good inflection points and their bad inflection points. What they don’t have is a “lock me into a environment where I can’t make changes” and where DRM ‘rights-revocation’ is _DEFINATELY_ in your future.
Think about it folks …. you have a CHOICE … and it ain’t Moronsoft Windows with Fisher-Price-Coleco-Vision(tm). Win-trolls …. be damned!!!
I’m reading OSNews for learning about different operating systems, programming languages etc. I wish some of the people here would think twice or maybe better triple about what they are posting because reading all this fud is not very exiting…
I’m not that good at English, but it’s starting to annoy me when people increasingly use word FUD whenever they want to say “nonsence” or “rubbish”.
FUD is Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt. Protect English language! 🙂
It was the GTK 2.2.2 file selector I was commenting on (the one at this link: http://gnomesupport.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3635). I installed it later and found out that the folder icon with a belt around it actually creates a new directory (not a very intuitive icon, in other words – I was guessing that it was for locking or maybe compressing a folder). And yes, I was pleased to see that all buttons had tooltips as well.
A step in the right direction, in other words!
I would appriciate it if you post suggestions about the file selector on the GnomeDesktop forums instead. They allow anonymous posting too.
This is embarassing! GNOME no longer offers unique desktop interface for a Linux-based operating system… it’s now just another bastardization of the Macintosh’s Aqua interface!
Where did people’s originality go?! If I want a Macintosh, I’ll go get one! But really… I don’t. I want a Linux box with a desktop interface I can call its own. In light of that concept, I’d like to see how Enlightenment 17 is coming along.
Naah… I think GNOME has lost the opportunity to be much more. Pity.
Ok people FooBarWidget has posted a new filselector for gtk-2.2. He included patches and even a nice install script.

What are you talking about? I don’t think Gnome is anything like the Aqua interface, or else I would like it even more. I just don’t understand why you say it is like Aqua. Where’s the dock? The menu bar at the top of the screen? The absolute awesome look? I love OS X, and if I could afford a Mac, I’d get one. But I don’t think Gnome is anything like Aqua.
